Medicare Supplement

Best Medicare Supplement Companies in Nebraska (2027)

Medigap plans are standardized, so Plan G covers the same costs at every company. What differs is the price, how the premium rises over time and the company's financial strength. Mutual of Omaha and Physicians Mutual, both based in Omaha and rated A+ by AM Best, top our list. Medicare.gov's Plan G estimates for a 65-year-old in Lincoln start at about $137 a month.

A Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policy pays some or all of the costs Original Medicare leaves you, like the Part A hospital deductible ($1,736 per benefit period in 2026) and the 20% Part B coinsurance. In Nebraska, as in most states, every plan letter is standardized by federal law. So this list doesn't rank plans. It ranks the companies that sell them, on things you can check.

How did we rank Medicare Supplement companies in Nebraska?

We started with the companies that listed a Plan G policy for a 65-year-old in Lincoln (ZIP 68508) in the Medicare.gov Medigap tool on October 2, 2026. We kept the ones with a verified AM Best rating, a Nebraska headquarters, or Medicare Advantage or Part D plans in Nebraska for 2027. Then we ordered them on three public facts:

  1. Financial strength. The AM Best rating, but only if we could confirm it on the company's own website. AM Best rates an insurer's ability to pay claims over the long run. Companies we could not verify are listed after those we could, which says nothing bad about them.
  2. Nebraska presence. A Nebraska headquarters ranked ahead of an out-of-state one at the same rating.
  3. The lowest Plan G estimate the company showed for Lincoln.

No company paid to be listed, and being listed is not an endorsement. We did not rank benefits, because they're identical. If you're new to Medigap, start with our Medicare Supplement guide.

Why do price and stability matter more than "plan quality"?

Because there's no quality difference to measure in the coverage itself. A Plan G from Mutual of Omaha pays exactly what a Plan G from Humana pays. After you meet the Part B deductible ($283 in 2026), both cover your share of Medicare-approved costs.

What does differ from company to company:

  • Today's premium. Lincoln estimates for the same plan and age differ by more than $100 a month.
  • How the premium is set. Community-rated, issue-age or attained-age pricing changes what you pay at 75 and 85.
  • Rate increases. Every company raises rates over time. How often and how much varies.
  • Financial strength. You may keep this policy for 20 years or more.
  • Service. How claims, billing and questions get handled.

That's why picking a Medigap policy is closer to buying a commodity than choosing a health plan. The plan letter decides your coverage. The company decides your price path. Our Plan G guide and Plan G vs Plan N help you pick the letter first.

Source: Medicare.gov Medigap tool, ZIP 68508, accessed October 2, 2026. Ranges span sex and tobacco use. These are estimates, not quotes. The Nebraska Department of Insurance publishes its own statewide Plan G ranges for age 65, and its two 2026 documents disagree slightly ($135 to $766 a month in one, $110 to $765 in the other), so treat every figure here as a starting point.

For comparison, Plan N listings for the same age and ZIP started between $109 and $278 a month. High-deductible Plan G ran $37 to $111 statewide, with a deductible of $2,950 in 2026 that rises to $3,050 in 2027. See High-Deductible Plan G for that math.

How does a company's pricing method change what you pay later?

The pricing method decides how your premium grows as you age, and it matters as much as the starting price. There are three types:

Pricing methodHow it worksWhat it means for you
Community-ratedSame premium for everyone, regardless of ageRises only with general increases
Issue-age ratedBased on your age when you buyDoesn't rise because you age, but can rise for other reasons
Attained-age ratedBased on your current ageRises as you age, plus general increases

The Nebraska Department of Insurance says most Nebraska Medigap policies are attained-age rated. A low attained-age price at 65 can pass a community-rated price by your 70s. Ask every company which method it uses before comparing.

When can you buy or switch Medigap companies in Nebraska?

Your best window is the one-time Medigap Open Enrollment Period: 6 months starting the first month you have Part B and are 65 or older. During it, companies must sell you any plan they offer, with no health questions and no higher price for health conditions.

After that window, the Nebraska Department of Insurance says "companies may refuse coverage because of health reasons." Nebraska has no birthday or anniversary rule for switching each year. The fall Annual Enrollment Period does not give you new Medigap rights. Read Medigap open enrollment in Nebraska for the guaranteed issue situations that do.

If you're under 65 on Medicare because of a disability, the Nebraska Department of Insurance's 2026 fact sheet says you get the same open enrollment period when Part B starts, though companies may not offer every plan. Earlier state guides said otherwise, so confirm with the company or Nebraska SHIP before you rely on it.

What does this ranking not tell you?

It doesn't tell you a company's rate increase history, because the Nebraska Department of Insurance doesn't publish a company-by-company Medigap rate guide. You have to ask. Here's what to ask each company or agent:

  1. Which pricing method does this policy use?
  2. How much has this policy's premium gone up in Nebraska in each of the last few years?
  3. Is this quote for a standard policy, a lower-priced "innovative" version, or a Medicare SELECT policy?
  4. Are there discounts, and what happens to them over time?
  5. Who handles claims and customer service?

You can also look up a company's complaint record in the NAIC Consumer Insurance Search. For a broader look at local companies, see our list of Nebraska-based insurance companies.

Frequently asked questions

There is no single best company, because every company's Plan G covers the same benefits. Compare the premium you are quoted today, how the company sets future premiums, its rate increase history and its financial strength. Mutual of Omaha and Physicians Mutual, both based in Omaha, carry AM Best A+ ratings on their own websites. Get quotes from several companies for your age, ZIP code and tobacco status.

On October 2, 2026, the Medicare.gov Medigap tool showed 31 Plan G listings for a 65-year-old in Lincoln (ZIP 68508). The low end of each company's estimate ran from $137 to $311 a month, with a median near $205. These are estimates, not quotes. Your price depends on your age, sex, tobacco use and the company's pricing method, and it can change each year.

Yes. Federal law standardizes Medigap plans in Nebraska, so Plan G from one company pays the same benefits as Plan G from any other. That is why price, premium increases, financial strength and customer service are the real differences. The one exception is a Medicare SELECT policy, which uses a hospital network in exchange for a lower premium.

You can apply any time, but after your one-time 6-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period, companies can use medical underwriting and may turn you down for health reasons. Nebraska has no birthday or anniversary rule that lets you switch each year. Some situations, such as your Medicare Advantage plan leaving your area, give you guaranteed issue rights to buy certain plans.

An attained-age rated policy bases your premium on your current age, so it goes up as you get older, on top of any increases for inflation or claims. The Nebraska Department of Insurance says most Nebraska Medigap policies are attained-age rated. Issue-age policies are priced on your age when you buy, and community-rated policies charge the same premium regardless of age.

Yes, according to the Nebraska Department of Insurance. Its 2026 fact sheet says people who qualify for Medicare because of a disability get the same Medigap Open Enrollment Period when their Part B begins, but insurance companies may not offer every plan to them. Older state guides said otherwise, so confirm with the company or Nebraska SHIP (1-800-234-7119) before you count on it.
