In short
- Methodist Fremont Health joined Omaha's Methodist Health System in 2018. Check the Fremont hospital and any Omaha Methodist specialist separately.
- Medica pulls its Medicare Advantage plans out of Dodge County for 2027, according to CMS plan data.
- The Nebraska SHIP office for Dodge County is in Tekamah and opens by appointment during fall enrollment. Otherwise call 1-800-234-7119.
- Dodge County is served by ENOA, the Omaha-based Area Agency on Aging (402-444-6536).
Fremont is about 51 miles and 65 to 70 minutes north of Bill Jurey's office in Lincoln, and it looks toward Omaha for much of its specialty care. Meetings with Fremont residents are mostly by phone or video, with office visits at 285 S 68th St Place when people are in Lincoln. His help is at no cost to you. The insurance companies pay agents, not clients.
Fremont grew to 28,350 residents by July 1, 2025, from 27,127 in 2020 (Census Bureau), and about 17.8% of them are 65 or older (American Community Survey, 2020 to 2024). Dodge County's older population grew more slowly: up 3.9% since 2020, to 7,381 people 65 and older in 2025, or 19.4% of the county.
How does Bill work with people in Fremont?
Over the phone or by video, with your medications, doctors' names and plan letters in front of you. The review goes medications first, then doctors and hospitals, then the cost of a hospital stay or ER visit, then your budget. Bill lays out what each option would cost you, and you make the call.
What should Fremont residents check about Methodist Fremont Health?
Both the Fremont hospital and its Omaha parent, separately. Methodist Fremont Health, at 450 E 23rd St (402-721-1610), became Fremont Health in 2014 and joined Omaha's Methodist Health System in 2018. Its campus includes Dunklau Gardens, a long-term care community. Unlike many smaller-town hospitals on this list, it is not a critical access hospital.
The Methodist connection matters when you need a specialist. Methodist Hospital at 8303 Dodge St in Omaha has 423 beds, and when a Fremont doctor refers you to a specialist, that specialist may well be in Omaha. A Medicare Advantage plan can include one Methodist campus and not the other, or include the hospital but not the doctor. For 2027, look up by name:
- Methodist Fremont Health.
- Your Fremont doctor.
- Any Omaha specialist and the Omaha hospital they use, whether Methodist, Nebraska Medicine or CHI Health.
Most HMO plans cover out-of-network care only in emergencies or for urgent care while you are traveling. Original Medicare with a Medicare Supplement works with any provider in the U.S. that takes Medicare. The Omaha location page covers the Omaha hospitals in detail. Plan options, premiums, networks and covered benefits vary by county and change every plan year.
What changes for Dodge County plans in 2027?
Medica is out. Dodge County drops off Medica's Medicare Advantage map in the 2027 CMS plan data, as do Douglas, Sarpy and Washington to the east. Members should already have a letter; read it, and your Annual Notice of Change if you got one, because the company's notice is what governs your plan.
The exit gives you two paths. During Annual Enrollment, October 15 to December 7, 2026, you can choose another Medicare Advantage plan, or Original Medicare with a Part D plan. Take the second path and federal law lets you buy certain Medigap policies without health questions for a limited time after your Medica coverage ends. Medicare Advantage in Omaha covers the eastern Nebraska plan market more closely.
Is switching insurance companies hard after decades with one?
It can feel that way. Fremont's biggest employers in 2020 included WholeStone Farms (more than 1,500 workers), Valmont in Valley (more than 1,500), Lincoln Premium Poultry (more than 1,000) and Methodist Fremont Health (500 to 1,000). People who spent 30 or 40 years with one employer often stayed with one insurer too.
Bill describes the moment a client has to change companies: "Okay, we can't call Sidney anymore. We got to call Barbara at this other company, and hopefully... when we call up, the phone tree isn't complicated." The names are made up. The adjustment is real, and walking through the new card, the new phone number and the new pharmacy rules is part of the job. The how to switch Medicare plans guide lays out the steps.
If you worked at the pork plant when Hormel owned it, note that Hormel sold it to WholeStone Farms in August 2018. Any retiree benefits you have should be checked with the plan administrator before you make a Medicare change.
Where can Fremont residents get local Medicare help?
Fremont is in ENOA's service area, the Eastern Nebraska Office on Aging, based in Omaha: 402-444-6536, or 402-444-6444 for Information and Assistance.
- Nebraska SHIP (formerly SHIIP): the office for Burt, Dodge and Washington counties is at 111 North 13th Street in Tekamah (402-380-9554), open by appointment only during open enrollment. Year-round, call 1-800-234-7119.
- Fremont Friendship Center, 1730 W 16th St (402-727-2815): run by Fremont Parks and Recreation, with lunch at 11:30. Call for current hours, since published schedules differ.
- 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227, TTY 1-877-486-2048): answered around the clock, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Fremont has no VA clinic. Veterans can use the Omaha VA Medical Center at 4101 Woolworth Ave, and the Medicare for veterans guide explains how VA care and Medicare fit together, including why the VA encourages enrolling in Part B on time.
The Nebraska SHIP guide explains how these offices work alongside a licensed agent. When you are ready to compare 2027 plans, talk to Bill.
Frequently asked questions
Check each plan by name for 2027. Methodist Fremont Health at 450 E 23rd St has been part of Methodist Health System since 2018, but a plan can list Methodist Hospital in Omaha and treat the Fremont campus differently. Look up Methodist Fremont Health, your Fremont doctor and any Omaha specialist in the plan's directory, then confirm with the offices.
Dodge County shares a SHIP office with Burt and Washington counties at 111 North 13th Street in Tekamah (402-380-9554). It is open by appointment only, during open enrollment. Any time of year you can call the statewide Nebraska SHIP line at 1-800-234-7119. SHIP counselors give unbiased help at no cost and do not sell insurance or recommend agents.
Its Medicare Advantage plans are. Dodge is on the list of eight eastern Nebraska counties Medica leaves in the 2027 CMS plan data, along with Douglas, Sarpy and Washington. Compare replacements during Annual Enrollment, October 15 to December 7, 2026. Going back to Original Medicare instead? The exit opens a guaranteed issue window for certain Medigap policies, with no health questions, as long as you apply on time. Your plan's notice lists the dates.
It might, if you have retiree benefits. Hormel sold the Fremont plant to WholeStone Farms in August 2018. If you get any retiree health coverage from either company, ask the plan administrator how it works with Medicare before you change anything. Retiree coverage generally pays after Medicare, and some retiree plans cannot be restarted once you drop them.
Yes. The Eastern Nebraska Office on Aging serves Dodge County along with Douglas, Sarpy, Cass and Washington counties. Its main line is 402-444-6536, and its Information and Assistance line is 402-444-6444. In Fremont, the city's Parks and Recreation department runs the Fremont Friendship Center at 1730 W 16th St (402-727-2815), with lunch at 11:30.
