The ranking

How we ranked them. We ranked companies by the number of Nebraska counties where they offer a standard (non-special-needs) Medicare Advantage plan with Part D drug coverage in 2027, counted from the CMS CY2027 Landscape file released in September 2026. Ties go to the company with more years in the Nebraska market, based on CMS landscape files from 2016 through 2026. We did not use any plan's premium, benefits or Star Rating. No company paid to be listed.

Medicare Advantage (Part C) is the private-plan alternative to Original Medicare. For 2027, eight companies sell standard Medicare Advantage plans somewhere in Nebraska, and several of them changed where they sell. This list ranks those companies on public CMS data about where they operate, not on what any plan costs or covers.

How did we rank Nebraska's Medicare Advantage companies?

We counted how many of Nebraska's 93 counties get at least one standard Medicare Advantage plan with drug coverage from each company in 2027. That count comes straight from the CMS CY2027 Landscape file, released in September 2026. When two companies tied, the one with more years in Nebraska's market ranked higher. No company paid to be listed, and being listed is not an endorsement.

We left out plan premiums, copays, extra benefits and Star Ratings on purpose. Those belong to individual plans, they change every year, and the right mix for you depends on your doctors, your prescriptions and your budget. A ranking can tell you who is in the market. It can't pick your plan.

Special needs plans (for people with both Medicare and Medicaid, chronic conditions or nursing home stays) are ranked separately on our list of D-SNP companies in Nebraska.

Which companies offer Medicare Advantage in Lincoln, Omaha and Grand Island for 2027?

The plan counts moved too. Lancaster County goes from 29 standard plans in 2026 to 26 in 2027, while special needs plans rise from 12 to 15. Douglas and Sarpy each drop from 29 standard plans to 24. Hall County rises from 20 to 21, mostly because Aetna returns. For a closer look at the Lincoln market, see Medicare Advantage in Lincoln.

What changed for Nebraska Medicare Advantage companies in 2027?

The biggest 2027 changes are UnitedHealthcare and Medica pulling back, and Devoted Health tripling its reach. If your company is on this list, you should have received an Annual Notice of Change in September.

  • UnitedHealthcare: its AARP plans with drug coverage shrink from 52 counties to 5 (Cass, Douglas, Lancaster, Sarpy and Washington). Elsewhere it keeps a plan without drug coverage, plus special needs plans.
  • Medica: leaves Butler, Cass, Dodge, Douglas, Lancaster, Sarpy, Saunders and Washington counties, adds Dakota, and ends up in 42 counties.
  • Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska: drops from 76 counties to 61 and trims its lineup to three plans, two of them new names.
  • Wellcare: drops its PPO plans and keeps two HMO-POS plans in 54 counties.
  • Humana: leaves six Panhandle counties, going from 32 counties to 26.
  • Aetna: moves from 58 counties to 54, returning to Hall and eight other central counties while leaving 13 others.
  • Devoted Health: grows from 14 counties to 42, adding Lancaster.

Statewide, 84 of 93 counties have at least one standard plan with drug coverage for 2027. Our news story on Medicare Advantage in Nebraska for 2027 covers what these exits mean if your plan is going away.

How do you look up 2027 Star Ratings for a plan?

CMS rates each Medicare Advantage and Part D contract from 1 to 5 stars, based on things like member experience, complaints and preventive care. The 2027 ratings post on Medicare.gov on or around October 8, 2026, a week before the Annual Enrollment Period opens.

  1. Go to the Medicare.gov Plan Finder and enter your ZIP code, your drugs and your pharmacy.
  2. After October 8, each plan in the results shows its overall star rating.
  3. Open a plan's details to see how it scored on the individual measures.
  4. Compare ratings only between plans available in your county.

Two rules tie to the ratings. A 5-star plan can be joined once between December 8 and November 30 through a special enrollment period. And if a plan has scored under 3 stars for three years in a row, its members can switch at any time. Our guide to Medicare Star Ratings explains the measures. CMS also removed 11 measures in its 2027 final rule, so a plan's rating can move for reasons that have nothing to do with how it treated you.

What does this ranking not tell you?

A company's county count says nothing about networks, drug coverage or your costs in a bad year. Those decide whether a plan works for you.

  • Networks. Check whether your doctors and hospitals, such as Bryan Health, CHI Health St. Elizabeth or Nebraska Medicine, are in the specific plan's network. Never assume. HMO and PPO plans handle out-of-network care very differently; see HMO vs PPO Medicare Advantage.
  • Drugs. Each plan has its own formulary (drug list) and its own tiers, so the same prescription can cost very different amounts.
  • Your worst-case year. Look at the plan's maximum out-of-pocket amount and its hospital and outpatient surgery costs.
  • Prior authorization. Since January 1, 2026, plans must decide standard requests within 7 calendar days and urgent ones within 72 hours.

How should you choose among these companies?

Start with your prescriptions and doctors, then narrow to the companies that serve your county. The order matters because a plan that misses one key drug or doctor is out, no matter who sells it.

  1. List every prescription, with the dose, and every doctor you want to keep.
  2. Enter them in Plan Finder for your ZIP code and note which plans cover them.
  3. Check each plan's network directly with the plan or your doctor's office.
  4. Compare the yearly premium, drug costs and maximum out-of-pocket amount.
  5. After October 8, check each finalist's 2027 Star Rating.
  6. Decide before December 7, 2026, so coverage starts January 1, 2027.

If you are still deciding between Medicare Advantage and a Medicare Supplement, read Medigap vs Medicare Advantage first. A Medigap policy may be hard to get later if you have health problems.

Frequently asked questions

CMS says Nebraska has 48 Medicare Advantage plans for 2027, down from 50 in 2026. That count includes special needs plans. How many you can actually choose from depends on your county. Lancaster County has 26 standard plans and 15 special needs plans for 2027, while 9 Nebraska counties have no standard plan with drug coverage at all.

Seven companies offer standard Medicare Advantage plans in Lancaster County for 2027: Aetna, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska, Devoted Health, Humana, MyAdvocate (Sanford Health), UnitedHealthcare and Wellcare. Medica is leaving Lancaster County for 2027. Devoted Health is new to the county. Use the Medicare.gov Plan Finder with your ZIP code to see every plan, because a company's lineup can differ from one county to the next.

CMS says 2027 Star Ratings will appear on Medicare.gov on or around October 8, 2026. Plan shopping on Medicare.gov opened October 1, 2026, but 2027 ratings won't show until the release. Ratings run from 1 to 5 stars and are given to each contract, so check the rating for the exact plan you are considering before the Annual Enrollment Period ends on December 7, 2026.

Not for everyone. County footprint tells you a company is committed to a wide area and is likely to be available where you live, which matters if you might move within Nebraska. It tells you nothing about whether your doctors are in the network or how your drugs are covered. The right plan depends on your doctors, drugs and budget, and that is a plan-by-plan comparison.

Your plan must send you a notice. You can pick another Medicare Advantage plan or go back to Original Medicare during the Annual Enrollment Period, October 15 to December 7, 2026. If you return to Original Medicare because your plan is leaving your area, federal rules give you a guaranteed right to buy certain Medigap policies, as long as you apply within the time limits in your notice.

A new company is not automatically a worse choice, but it has less of a track record here. Devoted Health and MyAdvocate entered Nebraska in 2026, and CMS gives new contracts a 'plan too new to be measured' label until they have enough data for a Star Rating. Ask how its network covers your doctors and hospitals, and check its 2027 rating on Medicare.gov after October 8, 2026.
