The ranking
How we ranked them. We included insurers headquartered in Nebraska, confirmed on the company's own website or Medicare.gov, that sell coverage retirees commonly buy: Medicare Supplement, Medicare Advantage or Part D, life or final expense, long-term care, or dental. They are ordered by how many of those product lines each sells, then by AM Best rating confirmed on the company's own website. Out-of-state companies are excluded. No company paid to be listed.

Insurance has deep roots in Nebraska. Omaha and Lincoln are home to several companies that sell exactly the coverage people buy around retirement: Medicare Supplement, Medicare Advantage, life and final expense, long-term care and dental. This list covers the six that are headquartered here, what each one sells, and how strong they are on public ratings.
How did we choose and rank these companies?
We included only companies headquartered in Nebraska, confirmed on their own websites or on Medicare.gov. Then we kept the ones that sell at least one product retirees commonly buy. Out-of-state companies with big Nebraska presences, like Wellabe in Des Moines, are left out on purpose. No company paid to be listed, and being listed is not an endorsement.
The order reflects breadth first: how many retiree product lines each company sells, out of Medicare Supplement, Medicare Advantage or Part D, life or final expense, long-term care, and dental. Ties go to the higher AM Best rating, counting only ratings shown on the company's own website. AM Best rates a company's ability to pay claims over the long run.
Which Nebraska companies sell which kinds of coverage?
Mutual of Omaha covers the most ground, and every company on the list sells life insurance or Medicare coverage. Here's the side-by-side, based on each company's website and CMS data:
| Company | Home city | Medigap | Medicare Advantage or Part D (2027) | Life or final expense | Long-term care | Dental | AM Best |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mutual of Omaha | Omaha | Yes | No | Yes | Yes | Yes | A+ |
| Physicians Mutual | Omaha | Yes | No | Yes | Not shown | Yes | A+ |
| Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska | Omaha | Yes | Yes | Not reviewed | Not reviewed | Not reviewed | Not verified |
| WoodmenLife | Omaha | Yes | No | Yes | Not shown | Not shown | A+ |
| Ameritas | Lincoln | Not shown | No | Yes | Not shown | Yes | A |
| Assurity | Lincoln | Not shown | No | Yes | Not shown | Not shown | A- |
"Not shown" means we didn't find the product on the company's website or in our research sources. "Not reviewed" means we only looked at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska's Medicare products. "Not verified" means we couldn't confirm the rating on the company's own site.
What does each company bring for retirees?
Each company has a different strength, so the best local fit depends on what you're shopping for.
- Medicare Supplement: Mutual of Omaha, Physicians Mutual, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska and WoodmenLife all sell Medigap. Plan G estimates for a 65-year-old in Lincoln on Medicare.gov ran $189 to $250 a month for Mutual of Omaha and $200 to $264 for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska on October 2, 2026. See Medicare Supplement companies in Nebraska.
- Medicare Advantage: Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska is the only Nebraska-based company here selling Medicare Advantage, and it reaches 61 counties for 2027. See Medicare Advantage companies in Nebraska.
- Life and final expense: All but Blue Cross sell life insurance. WoodmenLife and Mutual of Omaha publish no-exam options up to age 85. See life insurance companies for seniors.
- Long-term care: Mutual of Omaha sells a traditional policy on a form listed under Nebraska's Partnership program. See long-term care insurance companies.
- Dental, vision and hearing: Mutual of Omaha, Physicians Mutual and Ameritas sell individual dental plans, and Ameritas adds vision and hearing. See dental insurance for seniors.
Does buying from a Nebraska company make a difference?
Sometimes, but less than people think. Your coverage is backed by the company's finances and the policy terms, not by where its offices are.
- Medigap benefits are standardized, so a Plan G from an Omaha company covers exactly what a Plan G from an out-of-state company covers. Price and rate history are what differ.
- Medicare Advantage depends on networks. A Nebraska headquarters doesn't put Bryan Health, CHI Health or Nebraska Medicine in a plan's network. Check every plan.
- Service can feel more local. Some people like knowing the company is down the road in Omaha or Lincoln. That's a fair reason to prefer one, as long as the price and coverage hold up.
Which familiar companies did we leave off, and why?
A few companies with a strong Nebraska presence didn't meet the headquarters test:
- Wellabe, the parent of Medico Life and Health, lists its headquarters at 601 Sixth Avenue in Des Moines, Iowa. Medico sells Medicare Supplement plans in Nebraska, and Wellabe reports an AM Best A (Excellent) rating, affirmed May 2026. It appears on our Medigap, final expense and dental lists instead.
- Delta Dental of Nebraska sells individual dental and vision plans here, but we couldn't confirm its headquarters city on its website, so it's on our dental list rather than this one.
- Large national carriers like UnitedHealthcare, Aetna, Humana and Medica sell Medicare plans across Nebraska from headquarters in other states.
Leaving a company off this list isn't a judgment about its coverage. It only means the company isn't based here.
How do you check a Nebraska insurer before you buy?
Check three things: the license, the rating and the complaint record. Each takes a few minutes.
- License. Use the Nebraska Department of Insurance company and producer search.
- Rating. Look for the AM Best rating on the company's website or at ambest.com. On AM Best's scale of 13 ratings, A++ is highest, A+ second, A third and A- fourth.
- Complaints. Search the NAIC Consumer Insurance Search for the company's complaint record.

Frequently asked questions
Several well-known insurers are based in Nebraska. In Omaha, they include Mutual of Omaha, Physicians Mutual, WoodmenLife and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska. In Lincoln, they include Ameritas and Assurity. All six sell coverage that retirees commonly buy, such as Medicare Supplement, Medicare Advantage, life insurance, final expense, long-term care or dental.
Medico Life and Health Insurance Company is part of Wellabe, which lists its headquarters at 601 Sixth Avenue in Des Moines, Iowa. So it is not a Nebraska-based company today, even though Medico sells Medicare Supplement policies in Nebraska. Wellabe says AM Best affirmed an A (Excellent) rating for its subsidiaries in May 2026.
Not necessarily. Your policy is backed by the company's finances, not its address, and Medigap benefits are the same at every company. A Nebraska headquarters can mean local name recognition, but compare price, rate history, financial strength and service from local and national companies alike. For Medicare Advantage, the plan's network matters far more than where the company is based.
Mutual of Omaha, Physicians Mutual, WoodmenLife and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska all sell Medicare Supplement plans, according to their websites and Medicare.gov. In the Medicare.gov tool for a 65-year-old in Lincoln on October 2, 2026, Plan G estimates were $189 to $250 a month for Mutual of Omaha and $200 to $264 for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska.
Use the Nebraska Department of Insurance company and producer search, which runs on the NAIC's State Based Systems lookup. It shows whether a company or agent is licensed in Nebraska. For complaint records, use the NAIC Consumer Insurance Search. To file a complaint, contact the Department of Insurance online or at 877-564-7323.
