In short

  • Medicare.gov estimates for a 65-year-old in ZIP 68508 show starting Plan G prices of $137 to $311 a month across 31 listings (checked October 2, 2026).
  • Plan N starts at $109 to $278 a month across 30 listings for the same Lincoln ZIP and age.
  • Nebraska has no birthday rule. After your six-month Medigap open enrollment window, companies can ask health questions and say no.
  • Medica's Medicare Advantage plans leave Lancaster County for 2027, which gives members who return to Original Medicare a federal right to buy certain Medigap plans.
  • A Medigap policy has no network. It pays its share wherever Medicare pays, so the only question is whether your doctor accepts Medicare.

Most people in Lancaster County stay with Original Medicare. In June 2026, about 65% of the county's 60,420 Medicare beneficiaries were not in a Medicare Advantage plan (CMS). For a lot of them, a Medicare Supplement (also called Medigap) is what fills the gaps. This page covers what those policies cost in Lincoln, who has a special buying window for 2027, and where to get a second opinion in town. For how Medigap works in general, start with the statewide Medicare Supplement guide.

What does a Medicare Supplement cost in Lincoln?

For a 65-year-old in Lincoln, Medicare.gov shows Plan G starting between $137 and $311 a month, depending on the company. We checked the tool on October 2, 2026, using ZIP 68508 and leaving sex and tobacco blank, so each listing showed a range. The table uses the low end of each range.

Age 65, ZIP 68508ListingsLowest starting priceHighest starting price
Plan G31$137 a month$311 a month
Plan N30$109 a month$278 a month

The middle starting price for Plan G was about $205 a month. A few listings sat far above the rest, so read the company and the rating tier, not just the plan letter.

High-deductible Plan G costs much less each month, and statewide Medicare.gov estimates at 65 run about $37 to $111. You pay the first $3,050 of Medicare-approved costs in 2027 (up from $2,950 in 2026) before it pays. The high-deductible Plan G page runs that math.

These are estimates, not quotes. Rates can change on your policy's anniversary, and some companies offer household discounts that the tool does not show.

Why do two Lincoln neighbors pay different prices for the same Plan G?

Because the coverage is identical and the pricing is not. Federal rules standardize what Plan G pays, so a Plan G from one company covers the same costs as a Plan G from any other. What changes is how each company sets the premium.

  • Age, sex and tobacco use. These move the price at every company.
  • Rating method. The Nebraska Department of Insurance says most Nebraska policies are attained-age rated, so the premium rises as you get older. Issue-age policies price you on the age you buy. Community-rated policies charge everyone in an area the same.
  • The company's own claims history. Two companies with the same starting price can raise rates very differently over ten years.

The Department of Insurance does not publish a company-by-company Medigap rate guide. Medicare.gov's tool, Nebraska SHIP and a licensed agent are the practical ways to compare. If you are choosing between plan letters, the Plan G vs Plan N comparison shows when N's copays are worth it.

Who in Lincoln gets a guaranteed issue right for 2027?

Members of Medica's Medicare Advantage plans, mainly. CMS plan data shows Medica leaving Lancaster County for 2027. When a Medicare Advantage plan stops serving your area, federal rules let you buy Medigap Plan A, B, D or G without health questions (C or F if you were eligible for Medicare before 2020).

The right has conditions:

  1. You must go back to Original Medicare. Joining another Advantage plan does not trigger it.
  2. Apply as early as 60 days before your Medica coverage ends, and no later than 63 days after.
  3. Keep the notice letter and the postmarked envelope it came in. The Medigap company may ask for a copy.

A separate trial right covers people who joined Medicare Advantage when they first turned 65 and want out within 12 months. The Medigap open enrollment guide lists every situation.

When is the best time to buy a Medigap policy in Lincoln?

During your six-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period, which starts the first month you are 65 or older and have Part B. In that window a company cannot refuse to sell you any plan it offers or charge you more because of your health. Nebraska has no birthday or anniversary rule, so the window does not come back.

That timing matters for Lincoln's many public employees. If you work for the State of Nebraska, Lincoln Public Schools or the University past 65 and delay Part B, your Medigap window waits until Part B starts. Nebraskans under 65 on disability also get an open enrollment window when Part B begins, the Department of Insurance's 2026 fact sheet says, though companies may not offer every plan. An older state guide said under-65 applicants could be refused, so confirm with the company or Nebraska SHIP before you count on it.

How does a Medigap policy work with Lincoln hospitals and doctors?

There is no network to check. A Medigap policy pays its share whenever Original Medicare pays, at any doctor or hospital in the U.S. that accepts Medicare. Bryan, CHI Health, Madonna or a specialist in Omaha all work the same way, as long as that provider takes Medicare.

Call each office and ask two questions: Do you accept Medicare? Do you accept Medicare assignment? The second matters if you choose Plan N, which does not pay Part B excess charges. Plan G does.

A supplement does not cover prescriptions, so you will also want a drug plan. The Part D page for Lincoln covers the 2027 drug plan changes.

Frequently asked questions

For a 65-year-old in ZIP 68508, Medicare.gov's Medigap tool showed 31 Plan G listings on October 2, 2026. The low end of each listing ranged from $137 to $311 a month, and the middle low end was about $205. These are estimates that span sex and tobacco use, not quotes. Your real price depends on your age, sex, tobacco use, the company's rating method and any discounts it offers.

Usually, yes, if you go back to Original Medicare instead of joining another Medicare Advantage plan. Federal rules give you a guaranteed issue right to buy Medigap Plan A, B, D or G (C or F if you were eligible for Medicare before 2020). You can apply 60 days before your plan ends and no more than 63 days after. Keep the notice letter and its postmarked envelope as proof.

The October 15 to December 7 window is for Medicare Advantage and Part D, not Medigap. Nebraska has no birthday rule that lets you switch supplements each year. You can apply to a new Medigap company any time, but outside your open enrollment window or a guaranteed issue situation, the company can ask health questions, charge more or turn you down. Keep your current policy until a new one is approved.

No. Medigap policies sold today do not include drug coverage, so most people pair a supplement with a standalone Part D plan. Nebraska has 9 standalone Part D plans for 2027 (11 in 2026), and the same 9 are sold in every county. If you skip Part D and have no other creditable drug coverage, a late enrollment penalty can be added to your premium later.

Yes. A standard Medigap policy follows Original Medicare, which works with any doctor or hospital in the U.S. that accepts Medicare. There is no network and no referral rule. Several plans, including G and N, also pay 80% of emergency care outside the U.S., up to plan limits. That flexibility is one of the main reasons Lincoln residents who travel choose a supplement.
