Medicare Help for Omaha Residents

Bill Jurey helps Omaha residents with Medicare from his Lincoln office, about an hour away on I-80, mostly by phone and video, with in-person meetings in Lincoln. Omaha's care is split among Nebraska Medicine, Methodist and CHI Health, so the first job in any Medicare Advantage comparison is checking your own doctors and hospitals by name.

In short

  • Omaha care is split among three systems: CHI Health, Methodist Health System and Nebraska Medicine. A plan that includes one may not include the others.
  • The Fred and Pamela Buffett Cancer Center is the only National Cancer Institute designated cancer center in Nebraska. If you might need it, check how each plan treats it.
  • Bryan Health plans to open an outpatient campus in Elkhorn by spring 2027, partway through the 2027 plan year.
  • Volunteers Assisting Seniors (402-444-6617) is Omaha's state SHIP office, and ENOA (402-444-6444) is the local Area Agency on Aging.

Douglas County has 102,217 people on Medicare (CMS, June 2026), the most of any county this site covers, and its split hospital landscape makes plan choices complicated. Bill Jurey works with Omaha residents from his Lincoln office at 285 S 68th St Place. Most of those conversations happen by phone or video, and anyone who is in Lincoln is welcome to sit down at the office. The process is the same either way, and the help costs you nothing.

Douglas County had 93,667 residents age 65 and older on July 1, 2025, about 15.4% of the county. That is up 16.9% from 80,110 in 2020 (Census Bureau). In the city alone, about 70,900 people are 65 or older (American Community Survey, 2020 to 2024).

How does a Lincoln agent help people in Omaha?

By phone or video for most meetings, with the Lincoln office about 54 miles and roughly 65 minutes away on I-80. You do not have to make the drive to get a full review. You need your medication list, your doctors' names and about an hour.

Bill compares the plans offered in Douglas County specifically. That matters, because Medicare Advantage and Part D plans are sold county by county. The plan your sister has in Lancaster County may not exist at your Omaha address, or may come with a different network.

Omaha also has plenty of agents, and Bill is the first to say the choice comes down to fit: "If a Medicare agent's doing things correctly, I don't know that there's a whole lot of difference. A lot of it narrows down to: who do you want to work with? Do you communicate well with them? Do you like the person?"

Which Omaha health systems should you check in a plan network?

All three, plus any specialty hospital you use. Omaha care is split among CHI Health, Methodist Health System and Nebraska Medicine, and a Medicare Advantage plan that includes one system is not guaranteed to include the others.

SystemMain Omaha-area hospitals
Nebraska MedicineNebraska Medical Center, 4350 Dewey Ave (UNMC's academic medical center partner)
Methodist Health SystemMethodist Hospital, 8303 Dodge St (423 beds, Estabrook Cancer Center); Methodist Women's Hospital in Elkhorn
CHI HealthCreighton University Medical Center Bergan Mercy, 7500 Mercy Rd; Immanuel, 6901 N 72nd St; Lakeside, 16901 Lakeside Hills Ct
Specialty hospitalsMadonna Rehabilitation Hospitals Omaha, Nebraska Spine Hospital, OrthoNebraska, Boys Town National Research Hospital

Each system also reaches into nearby towns: Nebraska Medicine in Bellevue, CHI Health in Papillion, and Methodist in Fremont. If you live in one of those towns, the Omaha campus of the same system is often where you go for specialists.

What about the Buffett Cancer Center?

The Fred and Pamela Buffett Cancer Center at Nebraska Medicine opened to patients on June 5, 2017. It is the only National Cancer Institute designated cancer center in Nebraska, which is why people come to it from all over the state. Bill says he is amazed how many Nebraskans drive two hours to see a doctor in Lincoln or Omaha.

If there is any chance you would want care there, check how each 2027 plan you are considering handles it before you enroll. HMOs generally cover only in-network care outside of emergencies. PPOs cover out-of-network care at a higher cost. Original Medicare with a Medicare Supplement works anywhere that takes Medicare.

Bryan Health is coming to Elkhorn

Lincoln-based Bryan Health broke ground in October 2025 on an outpatient campus at the southwest corner of 204th Street and West Center Road. It is set to offer primary care, specialists, imaging and urgent care, and is scheduled to open by spring 2027. Because it opens partway through the 2027 plan year, do not assume its doctors will be in your plan's network. Ask the plan once the campus opens.

What is changing for Douglas County plans in 2027?

One familiar name gone and five fewer plans. Douglas County's standard Medicare Advantage count falls to 24 for 2027, from 29, with 15 special needs plans alongside, according to CMS data. Medica is leaving Douglas County, and your plan's Annual Notice of Change will show what is changing in yours. The companies offering standard plans here for 2027 are Aetna, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska, Devoted Health, Humana, UnitedHealthcare and Wellcare, and several of them changed how many plans they offer.

Omaha leans on Medicare Advantage more than the rest of the state. About 45% of Douglas County's 102,217 Medicare beneficiaries were in Medicare Advantage or a similar plan in June 2026, against 34% statewide (CMS). So a lot of Omaha households have a plan decision to make this fall. Medica members who return to Original Medicare get a federal guaranteed issue right to buy certain Medigap policies without health questions, as long as they apply within the deadlines in Medica's notice.

Where do Omaha residents get no-cost Medicare counseling?

Two places, both independent of any insurance company. Use them alongside an agent or instead of one.

  • Volunteers Assisting Seniors is Omaha's office for Nebraska SHIP, the state counseling program formerly called SHIIP: 900 S 74th Plaza, Suite 403, 402-444-6617. Counselors help with Medicare choices and do not recommend companies or agents. Nebraska SHIP's toll-free number, 1-800-234-7119, reaches the same program.
  • ENOA, the Eastern Nebraska Office on Aging, is at 4780 S 131st St. Its Information and Assistance line is 402-444-6444. It serves Douglas, Sarpy, Dodge, Cass and Washington counties.
  • 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227, TTY 1-877-486-2048) answers questions about your own Medicare record, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

ENOA's senior centers include Adams Park (3230 John Creighton Blvd), Camelot Friendship Center (9270 Cady Ave), Florence (2920 Bondesson St), the Intercultural Senior Center (5545 Center St), Millard/Montclair (2304 S 135th Ave) and Seven Oaks at Notre Dame (3439 State St). The guide to Nebraska SHIP and other local help explains how these offices differ from a licensed agent.

Retiring from a big Omaha employer?

Many Omaha retirees come off large employer plans, and the timing rules depend on that employer. The biggest Greater Omaha employers include Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska Medicine, CHI Health, Omaha Public Schools and UNMC (5,000 or more workers each), plus Methodist, First National Bank of Omaha, Fiserv, Mutual of Omaha, Union Pacific and Children's Nebraska.

  • Still working at 65? Whether you can delay Part B depends on your employer's size and coverage. Read working past 65 before you turn down Part B.
  • Omaha Public Schools retirees draw a pension from the Omaha School Employees plan, which NPERS in Lincoln now runs. Ask how any retiree health coverage works with Medicare before you change it.
  • Union Pacific retirees sign up with the Railroad Retirement Board rather than Social Security, and a separate contractor, Railroad Medicare, pays their Part B claims.
  • Military retirees need Part A and Part B to keep TRICARE For Life. The Bellevue page and Medicare for veterans cover this in depth.

Veterans also have the Omaha VA Medical Center at 4101 Woolworth Avenue. Its $86 million Ambulatory Care Center opened in August 2020.

Pick the one that fits your situation. Each covers Douglas County specifically.

You can change plans for 2027 from October 15 through December 7, 2026. Before then, read the Annual Notice of Change letter from your plan, write down every specialist you see (not just your primary care doctor), and check each one in the 2027 directory. When you are ready, talk to Bill.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Bill holds a Nebraska license and pulls up the Douglas County plan list, which is not always the Lancaster County list. Expect a phone or video meeting for most Omaha reviews, and the Lincoln office is open to you whenever you are down I-80. Carriers pay the agent, so the review costs you nothing.

They can. Medicare Advantage and Part D plans are offered by county, so the list for Douglas County can differ from the list for Lancaster County, and networks are often built around the local hospital systems. Enter your own ZIP code in the Medicare.gov Plan Finder, or ask an agent to run the Douglas County plans, rather than relying on what a friend in another county has.

Nobody can answer that in general, because it depends on the specific plan and the year. Check the plan's 2027 provider directory, then call the plan and the cancer center to confirm. If keeping access to a particular cancer center matters a lot to you, also compare Original Medicare with a Medigap policy, which works with any doctor or hospital in the U.S. that takes Medicare.

Volunteers Assisting Seniors is the Nebraska SHIP office for Omaha. It is at 900 S 74th Plaza, Suite 403, and the phone number is 402-444-6617. Counselors give unbiased help with Medicare choices at no cost and do not sell insurance. The statewide SHIP line is 1-800-234-7119, and 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) is another option.

ENOA, the Eastern Nebraska Office on Aging, is the Area Agency on Aging for Douglas, Sarpy, Dodge, Cass and Washington counties. Its Information and Assistance line, 402-444-6444, can connect you with local services, and it runs senior centers across Omaha. For one-on-one Medicare plan counseling, the designated state SHIP office in Omaha is Volunteers Assisting Seniors.
