In short
- York General is a critical access hospital with no system affiliation shown, named a Top 100 Critical Access Hospital in February 2026.
- York residents can head east to Lincoln or west to Grand Island for specialists, so check doctors in both directions.
- In a Medicare Advantage plan, compare the daily hospital copay and the out-of-pocket maximum, not just the premium.
- Devoted Health is a new Medicare Advantage option in York County for 2027 (CMS plan data).
- York County's 65-and-older share was 21.6% in July 2025, above the 18.3% statewide figure (Census).
York sits right on I-80, about 56 miles and 70 minutes west of Bill Jurey's office in Lincoln. Expect to meet by phone or video, unless you are in Lincoln for an appointment and want to stop by 285 S 68th St Place. Carriers pay the agent, so there is nothing for you to pay.
Roughly one York County resident in five is 65 or older: 3,139 people, or 21.6%, as of July 1, 2025, a 7.5% rise since 2020 (Census Bureau). The city of York counts 8,284 residents, and the American Community Survey (2020 to 2024) puts its 65-and-older share near 19.7%.
How does Bill work with people in York?
Over the phone or on video, with your medications, your doctors' names and your plan letters close at hand. York's spot on the interstate cuts both ways. Lincoln is about an hour east and Grand Island is to the west, so many York residents have doctors in more than one town. The review has to account for all of them.
The order does not change: medications, then doctors and hospitals, then the cost of a bad year, then your budget. Bill lays out the numbers, and you decide.
Which hospital do York residents use?
York General, at 2222 N Lincoln Ave (402-362-6671). It is a critical access hospital, the federal designation for small rural hospitals, and its site shows no affiliation with a larger health system. In February 2026 it was named a Top 100 Critical Access Hospital. York General also runs Hearthstone, a skilled nursing facility, and Willow Brook, an independent and assisted living community.
Because York General is not part of Bryan Health or CHI Health, a plan's listing of those systems tells you nothing about it. For each Medicare Advantage plan you consider for 2027:
- Look up York General by name.
- Look up your York doctor by name.
- Look up any Lincoln or Grand Island specialist, plus the hospital where they would treat you.
An HMO generally will not pay for non-emergency care outside its network. PPOs allow out-of-network visits, typically with higher cost sharing. Original Medicare with Medigap lets you see any provider that accepts Medicare, which can matter when your doctors are spread along I-80. The Medigap vs Medicare Advantage comparison lays out the trade-off. Plans on offer, their premiums, their networks and their benefits vary by county and are revised every year.
What does a hospital stay cost you in a Medicare Advantage plan?
More than the premium suggests, so look past it. Medicare Advantage plans set their own copays for hospital stays, surgery and imaging, up to a yearly out-of-pocket maximum for in-network care. Two plans with the same premium can treat a three-day stay at York General, or a transfer to a Lincoln hospital, very differently.
Bill puts it this way: "Oh, yeah, the medication costs look great, but let's look down in here: oh, MRIs are 40%. 40% of what? Do you know what an MRI costs? I got no clue."
When you compare plans, write down four numbers for each one:
| What to find | Where to look |
|---|---|
| Inpatient hospital copay, per day and for how many days | Summary of Benefits |
| Outpatient surgery copay or coinsurance | Summary of Benefits |
| Imaging (MRI, CT) copay or coinsurance | Summary of Benefits |
| In-network out-of-pocket maximum | Summary of Benefits or Plan Finder |
Original Medicare with a Medigap policy handles this differently. With Plan G, for example, once you pay the Part B deductible ($283 in 2026), the policy covers your share of Medicare-approved costs for the rest of the year, so a hospital stay or an MRI costs you nothing more.
What changes for York County plans in 2027?
At least one new option. CMS plan data shows Devoted Health expanding into York County for 2027, part of its jump from 14 Nebraska counties to 42. Other carriers may have changed benefits, premiums or networks, and your Annual Notice of Change letter lists what changed in your plan.
The 2027 Star Ratings are scheduled to post on Medicare.gov on or around October 8, 2026. They are one more data point, not a verdict, and the Star Ratings guide explains how to read them. Changes for 2027 can be made from October 15 through December 7, 2026.

Frequently asked questions
It depends on the plan and the year. York General at 2222 N Lincoln Ave is a critical access hospital, and its site shows no parent health system, so look it up by name in each plan's 2027 provider directory and confirm with the hospital. York General also runs Hearthstone skilled nursing and Willow Brook living, which may need separate checks.
Look at what you pay per day for an inpatient stay and for how many days, what outpatient surgery and imaging like MRIs cost, and the plan's yearly out-of-pocket maximum for in-network care. A plan with a low premium can cost much more in a year with a hospital stay. Run the numbers for a bad year, not just a good one.

Phone and video handle most York reviews. Bill's office at 285 S 68th St Place is about 56 miles east, around 70 minutes on I-80, so meeting in person makes the most sense on a day you already have a Lincoln appointment. He looks at your medications before anything else, then your doctors, hospital costs and budget. Insurance carriers pay the agent, so you owe nothing.
