In short

  • Gage County is 24.3% age 65 and older, compared with 18.3% statewide (Census, July 1, 2025).
  • Beatrice Community Hospital and Health Center is an independent, 25-bed critical access hospital. Look it up by name in each plan.
  • Blue Rivers Area Agency on Aging is headquartered at 103 Eastside Blvd in Beatrice (402-223-1376).
  • Nebraska has no Medigap birthday rule, so switching supplements after your first six months can mean answering health questions.
  • For 2027, Devoted Health adds Gage County to its Medicare Advantage service area.

Beatrice is an hour south of Bill Jurey's Lincoln office, about 44 miles down US-77. Meetings with Beatrice residents usually happen by phone or video, with office visits at 285 S 68th St Place when people are in Lincoln. There is no fee to you, since the insurer pays the agent.

Gage County has the oldest population of any county these location pages cover. On July 1, 2025, 5,267 of its 21,711 residents were 65 or older, which is 24.3%, compared with 18.3% for Nebraska as a whole (Census Bureau). In Beatrice itself, about 21.4% of residents are 65 or older (American Community Survey, 2020 to 2024). That means a lot of people here are not new to Medicare. They have been on it for years.

How does Bill work with people in Beatrice?

By phone and video, mostly, with your plan letters in front of you. A review for someone who has been on Medicare a while looks different from a first-time enrollment. Instead of explaining the basics, Bill checks whether your current plan still fits your medications, your doctors and your budget for 2027.

Many people never get that check. Bill tells the story of a client who had been on Medicare for years without knowing her plan covered care she needed. Nobody had walked her through the benefits. That kind of gap is easy to miss when the same plan renews quietly every January, and it is the whole point of a yearly review. The blog post on that story has more.

Which hospital do Beatrice residents use?

Beatrice Community Hospital and Health Center, at 4800 Hospital Parkway on US-77 north of town. It is an independent nonprofit with 25 beds, and it has been certified as a critical access hospital since December 1, 2005. It describes itself as the largest critical access hospital in southeast Nebraska.

Because it is independent rather than part of Bryan Health or CHI Health, you cannot infer its network status from a big-system listing. Look it up by name in every Medicare Advantage plan you consider for 2027, then call the hospital to confirm. Do the same for your Beatrice doctor and for any Lincoln specialist you drive up US-77 to see.

In an HMO, care outside the network is generally covered only for emergencies and urgent care away from home. Original Medicare, with or without a Medigap policy, has no network: any doctor or hospital in the country that accepts Medicare is covered. What is available, what it costs, who is in network and what is covered all depend on your county and can change each year. For the Lincoln side of the trip, see the Lincoln location page.

Should you switch Medigap plans after years on one?

Think it through before you apply. Your one-time Medigap open enrollment window lasts six months from the month you are 65 and have Part B. After it ends, Nebraska insurers can ask health questions and decline you. The Nebraska Department of Insurance's 2026 Medigap fact sheet describes no birthday rule or yearly switching window that would reopen it.

That cuts both ways for long-time Medigap holders in Beatrice:

  • If you are healthy, applying for a lower-priced policy with the same plan letter can make sense. Most Nebraska Medigap policies are priced by attained age, so premiums rise as you get older.
  • If you have health conditions, you may not pass underwriting. Never cancel your current policy until the new one is approved in writing.
  • If your Medicare Advantage plan pulls out of Gage County, federal rules let you buy certain Medigap policies with no health questions, provided you apply during the short window tied to your plan's end date.

The Medigap open enrollment guide explains those rules in full.

What changes for Gage County Medicare Advantage in 2027?

There is a new name on the list. CMS plan data shows Devoted Health, a company that only entered Nebraska in 2026, expanding into Gage County for 2027. Devoted grows from 14 Nebraska counties to 42. Check your Annual Notice of Change letter, then compare during Annual Enrollment, October 15 to December 7, 2026. The annual enrollment review walks through the steps.

Where can Beatrice residents get local Medicare help?

Beatrice is the headquarters of Blue Rivers Area Agency on Aging, at 103 Eastside Blvd (402-223-1376 or 888-317-9417). It serves Gage, Jefferson, Johnson, Nemaha, Otoe, Pawnee, Richardson and Thayer counties, so people in Nebraska City and Fairbury call the same office.

  • Beatrice Senior Center, 101 N 25th St (402-223-3055): open weekdays for people 55 and up, with a noon lunch by reservation.
  • Nebraska SHIP (formerly SHIIP), reached through its statewide line at 1-800-234-7119. SHIP has offered appointment-only counseling at the Beatrice senior center every other Tuesday, a schedule that began in 2021. Call that number to confirm it is still running before you plan on it.
  • 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227, TTY 1-877-486-2048): open around the clock, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Beatrice is also home to the Beatrice State Developmental Center, a state DHHS facility, so the area has state-employee retirees. If that is you, ask how any retiree coverage works with Medicare before you change anything. The Nebraska SHIP guide explains each office's role, and you can talk to Bill when you want a plan comparison.

Frequently asked questions

Blue Rivers Area Agency on Aging is headquartered in Beatrice at 103 Eastside Blvd (402-223-1376 or 888-317-9417) and serves eight southeast Nebraska counties. Nebraska SHIP, the state's unbiased counseling program, takes calls at 1-800-234-7119. SHIP has offered appointment-only counseling at the Beatrice senior center in the past, so ask the SHIP line whether that is running this fall.

That depends on the plan, and it can change from year to year. Beatrice Community Hospital and Health Center is an independent nonprofit, not part of a larger system, so check it by name in each plan's 2027 provider directory. Then call the hospital to confirm. Check your Beatrice doctor and any Lincoln specialist separately.

You can apply at any time, but after your one-time six-month Medigap open enrollment window, insurers in Nebraska can ask health questions and turn you down. Nebraska has no birthday rule that reopens the window each year. Some situations, such as your Medicare Advantage plan leaving the area, give you a guaranteed right to buy. Hold on to your current policy until the new company says yes in writing.

Devoted Health is new to Gage County for 2027, according to CMS plan data. UnitedHealthcare keeps its AARP plans that include drug coverage in just five eastern counties (Cass, Douglas, Lancaster, Sarpy and Washington), so Beatrice residents will not see them. Your plan's Annual Notice of Change covers what changes in your own coverage. Plan availability, premiums, networks and benefits vary by county and change every year, so search ZIP code 68310 in the Medicare.gov Plan Finder.

About 44 miles, roughly an hour up US-77, to 285 S 68th St Place in Lincoln. Plan on meeting by phone or video, or stopping in when you are in Lincoln for appointments. The review is the same either way: medications first, then doctors, hospital costs and your budget. His help costs you nothing.
