In short

  • Crete Area Medical Center is a Bryan Health critical access hospital. Check it by name, separately from the Lincoln Bryan hospitals.
  • CMS data shows Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska leaving Saline County's Medicare Advantage market for 2027, while Devoted Health enters.
  • Leaving a plant job before 65? COBRA does not count as job-based coverage for delaying Part B.
  • Saline County Aging Services in Wilber (402-821-3330) has certified SHIP counselors.

Crete is about 30 miles and 45 minutes southwest of Bill Jurey's office at 285 S 68th St Place in Lincoln. That is close enough to drive up for a meeting, and far enough that a phone or video call is often easier. Either works. There is no charge for his help, because carriers pay the agent.

Crete had 7,747 residents on July 1, 2025 (Census Bureau). It is a younger town than its county: about 12.7% of city residents are 65 or older (American Community Survey, 2020 to 2024), while Saline County as a whole is at 18.2%, or 2,733 people, up 12.6% since 2020.

How does Bill work with people in Crete?

Phone and video do most of the work, and the Lincoln office is there when you want to sit across a table. The conversation starts with your medications, moves to your doctors and hospital, then to what a bad year would cost you, and ends with your budget. You make the call.

Crete is home to a few large employers, and for their workers the Medicare conversation often starts before 65, with the question of whether you can afford to leave.

Which hospital do Crete residents use, and what should you check?

Crete Area Medical Center, at 2910 Betten Drive (402-826-2102), is Crete's hospital. It is part of Lincoln-based Bryan Health and is a critical access hospital, the federal designation for small rural hospitals.

Being a Bryan hospital does not settle the network question. A Medicare Advantage plan's directory can list Bryan's Lincoln hospitals and treat a smaller campus differently, or the reverse. Check three things by name for 2027:

  1. Crete Area Medical Center itself.
  2. Your Crete doctor or clinic.
  3. Any Lincoln specialist you see, and the hospital where that specialist operates.

HMOs generally cover only in-network care, apart from emergencies and urgent care away from home. PPOs allow out-of-network care, generally with a higher copay or coinsurance. Original Medicare and a Medigap policy skip networks entirely and work at any U.S. doctor or hospital that takes Medicare. For the Lincoln hospitals, see the Lincoln location page.

What changes for Saline County Medicare Advantage in 2027?

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska is leaving the county's Medicare Advantage market. CMS plan data shows Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska dropping from 76 counties to 61 for 2027, and Saline County is on the exit list. Devoted Health, meanwhile, expands into Saline County.

If your plan is ending, you will get a notice, and you need a new plan for January 1, 2027. You can choose another Medicare Advantage plan or go back to Original Medicare with a Part D plan. Because your plan left the area, federal rules also give you a guaranteed issue right to buy certain Medigap policies, including Plan G, without health questions, if you apply between 60 days before and 63 days after your coverage ends. The Medigap open enrollment guide explains those rights.

What is sold in Saline County, at what premium, and with which network and benefits, is set county by county and can change every January.

Retiring from Smithfield, Purina or Doane?

Plan your health coverage before you plan your last day. Crete's major employers include the Smithfield Foods pork plant, with about 2,200 workers, which opened in 1967 as Farmland Foods, and Nestle Purina, with more than 400. Doane University, founded in 1872, is the oldest private college in Nebraska.

Bill has seen the same pattern many times: "Nine times out of ten, if you're under the age of 65 and you're trying to retire early, sometimes you can't, because you can't afford the medications, because your group health plan is paying a large portion of that prescription medications."

If you leave before 65, your choices are usually COBRA, an ACA Marketplace plan or a spouse's plan. The early retirement health insurance page compares them. Two Medicare rules matter here:

  • Still working at 65? If your employer has 20 or more employees, the group plan generally pays first, and you can usually delay Part B without a penalty until the job or coverage ends.
  • On COBRA at 65? COBRA does not count as current job-based coverage. The 8-month window to sign up for Part B starts when the job ends, whether or not you take COBRA. See COBRA vs Medicare.

Where can Crete residents get local Medicare help?

The county's aging office is in Wilber, not Crete. Saline County Aging Services, also known as Saline Eldercare (402-821-3330), has staff who are certified Nebraska SHIP counselors. Aging Partners in Lincoln covers Saline County too, at 402-441-7070.

The state directory lists no senior center in Crete; the DeWitt Senior Center at 202 E Fillmore Ave (402-683-4326) is the closest listed. The City of Crete points older residents to home-delivered meals run with Crete Area Medical Center, Saline County Area Transit (402-418-2743), and Centennial Terrace, 40 units of elderly public housing at 1600 Grove Ave.

Statewide, Nebraska SHIP (formerly SHIIP) answers at 1-800-234-7119, and 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227, TTY 1-877-486-2048) is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The Nebraska SHIP guide explains what each one does. For a plan comparison, talk to Bill.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Crete Area Medical Center at 2910 Betten Drive is part of Lincoln-based Bryan Health and is a critical access hospital. Do not assume it shares network status with Bryan's Lincoln hospitals in every plan. Look it up by name in each 2027 Medicare Advantage directory, along with your Crete doctor and any Lincoln specialist you see.

For Medicare Advantage, yes. CMS plan data for 2027 shows Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska dropping 15 counties, and Saline is one of them. If you have one of its plans, you should get a notice. Pick a new plan between October 15 and December 7, 2026. You may also have a right to buy a Medigap policy without health questions if you return to Original Medicare.

Saline County Aging Services, also called Saline Eldercare, is in Wilber and can be reached at 402-821-3330. Its staff are certified Nebraska SHIP counselors who help at no cost. Aging Partners in Lincoln also covers Saline County (402-441-7070), and the statewide Nebraska SHIP line is 1-800-234-7119. Counselors do not sell plans.

Look at three bridges: COBRA from your employer, an ACA Marketplace plan, or a spouse's job-based plan. Start with your medications, because drug costs often decide which bridge is affordable. At 65, sign up for Medicare on time. COBRA and retiree coverage do not count as current job-based coverage, so they will not protect you from the Part B late penalty.

The state's senior center directory does not list one in Crete. The closest listed are the DeWitt Senior Center at 202 E Fillmore Ave and the Saline County office in Wilber. The City of Crete lists home-delivered meals run with Crete Area Medical Center, Saline County Area Transit (402-418-2743) and Centennial Terrace elderly housing at 1600 Grove Ave.
