In short
- CMS data shows UnitedHealthcare's Medicare Advantage plans with drug coverage will not be offered in Hall County for 2027. Aetna returns with seven plans.
- Grand Island has two hospitals from two systems: CHI Health St. Francis and Bryan Health's Grand Island Regional Medical Center. Check both by name.
- A Medicare Advantage plan that stops serving Hall County opens a short federal window to buy certain Medigap policies with no health questions.
- Midland Area Agency on Aging in Hastings (402-463-4565) is the local Nebraska SHIP counseling office for Hall County.
Grand Island is about 98 miles from Bill Jurey's office in Lincoln, so most of his Grand Island work happens by phone or video. If you are already in Lincoln for a specialist appointment, you can stop by the office at 285 S 68th St Place and sit down in person. Either way, his help costs you nothing.
The Census Bureau counted 10,529 Hall County residents 65 or older on July 1, 2025, roughly 16.5% of the county and 9.2% more than in 2020. This fall, everyone in a Medicare Advantage plan here gets a letter describing what changes for 2027, and for some of them, that letter says the plan is ending.
How does Bill work with people in Grand Island?
Mostly over the phone or on a video call, with your medication list and doctors' names in front of you. I-80 makes the trip to Lincoln easy enough when you already have a reason to be there, like a specialist visit or a family weekend.
He once met a client in a plastic booth at an old Sinclair station off I-80, somewhere between Lincoln and Grand Island. That was a one-time meeting, not a standing offer, but it says something about how he works: the conversation matters more than the furniture.
The review itself follows the same order as it would in the office. Medications first, then doctors and hospitals, then what a hospital stay or ER visit would cost you, then your budget.
What is changing for Hall County Medicare Advantage in 2027?
Quite a bit. CMS plan data for 2027 shows 21 standard Medicare Advantage plans in Hall County, up from 20 in 2026, plus 13 special needs plans. The total barely moves, but the companies behind it shift.
| Company | 2027 change in Hall County |
|---|---|
| UnitedHealthcare | Plans with drug coverage leave; a plan without drug coverage remains |
| Aetna | Returns, with seven plans |
| Medica | Four plans become three |
| Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska | Four plans become three |
| Wellcare | Four plans become two |
If your UnitedHealthcare plan with drug coverage is ending, you need to choose something new for 2027. You also get a federal guaranteed issue right to buy certain Medigap policies, including Plan G, without health questions if you return to Original Medicare. The deadlines are tied to when your plan coverage ends, so do not wait until December.
About 38.6% of Hall County's 11,701 Medicare beneficiaries were in Medicare Advantage or a similar plan in June 2026 (CMS). Plan choices, premiums, networks and benefits differ from county to county and change each year. The Grand Island Medicare Advantage page goes plan type by plan type.
Which Grand Island hospitals should you check in a plan network?
Both of them, because they belong to different systems.
- CHI Health St. Francis, 2620 W Faidley Ave, has been Grand Island's hospital since 1887. It has the CHI Health Regional Cancer Center (40+ years), a 24/7 cath lab that opened in March 2022, Primary Stroke Center certification, and a 36-bed skilled care unit with a CMS 5-star rating.
- Grand Island Regional Medical Center, 3533 Prairieview St, is a 67-bed hospital that Bryan Health bought in 2019.
- Merrick Medical Center in Central City is a Bryan Health community hospital that opened in 2022.
Grand Island has the same two big names as Lincoln, CHI Health and Bryan Health. That does not mean a plan treats them the same way in both cities. Check the Grand Island facilities by name, and check any Lincoln, Omaha or Kearney specialist separately. Medicare Advantage HMOs generally cover only in-network care outside of emergencies. A Medicare Supplement paired with Original Medicare is accepted wherever Medicare is.
How do Grand Island veterans fit the VA and Medicare together?
Many use both. The Grand Island VA Medical Center at 2201 N Broadwell Ave opened in 1950 and celebrated its 75th anniversary on September 26, 2025. It has a Community Living Center for long-term care, rehabilitation and hospice, plus an outpatient clinic.
The VA generally pays for care at VA locations, or outside care it approves ahead of time. Medicare pays for care at non-VA doctors and hospitals like St. Francis. The VA encourages veterans to sign up for Part B when first eligible, because the late penalty grows each year you wait. VA drug coverage counts as creditable coverage, so you can delay Part D without a penalty while you have it. The state veterans' home that used to be in Grand Island moved to Kearney in January 2019. More detail is on the Medicare for veterans page.
Where can Grand Island residents get no-cost Medicare counseling?
Grand Island's nearest SHIP counselors work out of Hastings. Midland Area Agency on Aging handles both aging services and Nebraska SHIP (formerly SHIIP) counseling for Hall County, at no cost and with nothing to sell.
- Midland Area Agency on Aging: 2727 W 2nd St, Hastings, 402-463-4565 or 800-955-9714.
- Nebraska SHIP, if you would rather call the state office: 1-800-234-7119.
- 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227, TTY 1-877-486-2048): open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
In town, the Grand Generation Center at 304 E 3rd St (308-385-5308) is run by the nonprofit Senior Citizens Industries. It is open weekdays from 7:30 to 3:30 and offers meals, home-delivered meals, foot clinics, a fitness center, and information and assistance. Hall County also has senior centers in Doniphan and Wood River.
Retiring from JBS or another Grand Island employer?
Check how your employer coverage works with Medicare before you turn 65. The JBS beef plant alone employed more than 3,600 people in 2020. If you keep working past 65 at an employer with 20 or more employees, the group plan generally pays first and you may be able to delay Part B. At a smaller employer, Medicare pays first. The working past 65 guide and Turning 65 in Grand Island walk through the timing.
If you have a standalone Part D plan, read your 2027 letter closely. SilverScript Choice and HealthSpring Extra Rx are leaving Nebraska for 2027, so people in those plans need a new one. The Grand Island Part D page covers drug plans in Hall County. When you are ready to compare, talk to Bill.
Frequently asked questions
Yes. Bill is licensed in Nebraska and compares the plans offered in Hall County, which are not the same as the Lincoln lineup. Most Grand Island meetings happen by phone or video, and if you are in Lincoln for a specialist visit you can stop by the office. Bill's help costs you nothing, because the insurance carriers pay the agent.
Its Medicare Advantage plans that include drug coverage are not in the CMS 2027 plan data for Hall County. UnitedHealthcare still lists a plan without drug coverage and special needs plans for people with Medicaid. If your plan is ending, it must send you a notice. You can choose a new plan during Annual Enrollment, October 15 to December 7, 2026, and you may have a right to buy a Medigap policy without health questions.
Check CHI Health St. Francis and Grand Island Regional Medical Center, which is part of Bryan Health. If you use Merrick Medical Center in Central City, check it too. Then check any specialist or hospital you travel to in Kearney, Lincoln or Omaha. Look up each doctor by name for 2027, because a hospital being in network does not mean every doctor there is.
Midland Area Agency on Aging in Hastings is the local Nebraska SHIP office for the Midland region, which includes Hall County. It is at 2727 W 2nd St, and the phone number is 402-463-4565 or 800-955-9714. You can also call the statewide SHIP line at 1-800-234-7119. SHIP counselors do not sell insurance or recommend agents.
They are separate programs, and many veterans use both. The VA generally covers care at VA locations like the Grand Island VA Medical Center, or outside care it approves ahead of time. Medicare covers care from non-VA doctors and hospitals such as St. Francis. The VA encourages veterans to enroll in Part B when first eligible to avoid a late penalty, and VA drug coverage counts as creditable for Part D.
