In short

  • Roughly 61% of the 11,701 people on Medicare in Hall County stayed with Original Medicare in June 2026, and that is who Medigap serves.
  • Compare Grand Island quotes on identical terms: same plan letter, age, tobacco status, start date and discounts.
  • UnitedHealthcare's drug-covering Advantage plans drop out of Hall County for 2027, which opens a guaranteed issue right to Medigap for members who switch to Original Medicare.
  • A Medigap policy has no network, which suits people who see specialists in Kearney, Lincoln or Omaha.
  • Plan G pays the skilled nursing coinsurance for days 21 to 100, which is $217 a day in 2026.

Hall County leans toward Original Medicare. In June 2026, about 7,180 of its 11,701 Medicare beneficiaries, roughly 61%, were not in a Medicare Advantage plan (CMS). Many of them pair it with a Medicare Supplement, also called Medigap, to cover the deductibles and coinsurance Medicare leaves behind. This page covers buying one from a Grand Island address. The statewide Medicare Supplement guide explains how the plan letters work.

How do you get an accurate Medigap price for a Grand Island address?

Ask every company the same question. Federal rules make each plan letter identical in what it pays, so the only differences are price, rate increases and service. Quotes only compare cleanly when the terms match.

Use this checklist when you gather Grand Island quotes:

  1. Same plan letter. Compare Plan G with Plan G and Plan N with Plan N.
  2. Same ZIP. Use 68801 or 68803, whichever is yours. Companies can price by area.
  3. Same personal details. Age, sex and tobacco use all move the price.
  4. Same start date. A quote for a later month can be priced at an older age.
  5. Rating method. Ask whether the policy is attained-age (the most common kind in Nebraska, per the state Department of Insurance, with premiums that climb as you age), issue-age or community-rated.
  6. Discounts. Some companies give household or payment discounts that online tools do not show.

Medicare.gov's Medigap tool gives estimates, not quotes, and Nebraska has no state-published rate chart by company, so expect to collect a few real quotes.

Which Hall County residents can buy a Medigap policy without health questions in 2027?

Mainly UnitedHealthcare members whose Advantage plan with drug coverage is ending. CMS plan data shows UnitedHealthcare's drug-covering plans leaving Hall County for 2027. If you leave a plan that no longer serves your area and return to Original Medicare, a federal guaranteed issue right lets you skip health questions for Medigap Plans A, B, D and G (and C or F if you had Medicare eligibility before 2020).

The rules are strict:

  • The right applies only if you go back to Original Medicare.
  • Your window runs from 60 days before the plan ends until 63 days after.
  • Save the termination letter with its postmarked envelope in case the insurer asks for proof.

Why does no-network coverage appeal to Grand Island retirees?

Because care around here is often spread out. A Grand Island household might see a family doctor in town, a cardiologist in Kearney and a cancer specialist in Omaha. A Medigap policy pays its share at any of them, as long as each one accepts Medicare. There is no directory to check and no referral rule.

The same is true in Grand Island itself. CHI Health St. Francis and Grand Island Regional Medical Center belong to different systems, and a supplement does not care which one you use. Ask each office whether it accepts Medicare and whether it accepts Medicare assignment. Doctors who do not accept assignment can bill up to 15% above the Medicare-approved amount, which Plan G covers and Plan N does not.

If you are weighing this against an Advantage plan, the Medigap vs Medicare Advantage comparison lays out the trade-offs.

What does Medigap pay after a hospital stay in Grand Island?

It pays the coinsurance Original Medicare leaves you after a stay. Following a qualifying hospital stay, Original Medicare covers skilled nursing care, but from day 21 through day 100 you owe a daily coinsurance of $217 in 2026. Plan G and Plan N pay that coinsurance in full.

That matters in a town where skilled care is close to home. CHI Health St. Francis runs a 36-bed skilled care unit, and the Grand Island VA Medical Center has a Community Living Center for veterans. Plan G and Plan N also pay the Part A hospital deductible, $1,736 per benefit period in 2026.

Is Plan G or Plan N the better fit around Grand Island?

Plan G is simpler, and Plan N can cost less each month. Both leave you the Part B deductible ($283 in 2026). Plan N adds copays of up to $20 for some office visits and up to $50 for emergency room visits that do not lead to admission, and it does not cover excess charges.

If your specialists are spread across several towns, find out whether each one accepts assignment before choosing N. The Plan G vs Plan N comparison runs the break-even math.

Where can Grand Island residents compare supplements?

Nebraska SHIP (formerly SHIIP) gives unbiased Medigap help at no cost, and for Hall County its local partner is the Midland Area Agency on Aging in Hastings, at 402-463-4565 or 800-955-9714. SHIP's statewide number is 1-800-234-7119. Closer to home, the Grand Generation Center at 304 E 3rd St runs an information and assistance service. Medicare's own number, 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227), works 24 hours a day, 7 days a week (TTY 1-877-486-2048).

Bill compares supplements from multiple companies for Grand Island clients over the phone or on video, or across the table in Lincoln if you are coming to town anyway. A supplement does not cover prescriptions, so plan for a drug plan too: the Grand Island Part D page covers 2027. Then talk to Bill when you want quotes.

Frequently asked questions

Each company sets its own price, so there is no single Grand Island number. Your quote reflects your age, sex, tobacco use and ZIP code, plus the company's rating method and any household discount. Enter 68801 or 68803 and your age in Medicare.gov's Medigap tool for current estimates, then get exact quotes. Plan G benefits are the same at every company, so line up the same letter side by side.

Usually, yes. When your Medicare Advantage plan stops serving your area and you return to Original Medicare, a federal guaranteed issue right lets you buy Plan A, B, D or G without health questions, or C or F if you were Medicare-eligible before 2020. The window opens 60 days before your plan ends and closes 63 days after, so save the notice and its envelope.

Yes, as long as each one accepts Medicare. Standard Medigap policies have no network; they follow Original Medicare, which pays providers across the country that take it. For CHI Health St. Francis, Grand Island Regional Medical Center or an out-of-town specialist, call and confirm they accept Medicare, and ask whether they accept assignment.

It depends on how much of your care is outside the VA. The VA generally covers care at VA facilities, like the Grand Island VA Medical Center, and outside care it approves in advance. Medicare covers care from non-VA doctors and hospitals, and a Medigap policy fills Medicare's gaps for that care. If most of your care is outside the VA, a supplement can make sense. If nearly all of it is at the VA, weigh the premium against what you would actually use.

If you joined Medicare Advantage when you first became eligible at 65, a trial right lets you return to Original Medicare within 12 months and buy any Medigap policy without health questions. After that, Nebraska has no birthday rule, so outside a guaranteed issue situation a company can ask health questions, charge more or decline your application.
