Medicare Supplement Insurance in Omaha, NE

A Medicare Supplement in Omaha is priced by the company using your age, sex, tobacco use, ZIP code and rating method, so always quote with your own Omaha ZIP. More than half of Douglas County's 102,217 Medicare beneficiaries use Original Medicare. In short

  • About 55% of Douglas County's 102,217 Medicare beneficiaries were in Original Medicare in June 2026, the group a Medigap policy is built for.
  • Medigap prices in Omaha depend on age, sex, tobacco use, ZIP code, discounts and whether the company uses attained-age, issue-age or community rating.
  • Medica exits Douglas and Sarpy counties for 2027. A Medica member who goes back to Original Medicare gets a short guaranteed issue window for certain Medigap plans.
  • A supplement has no network, so it pays at Nebraska Medicine, Methodist, CHI Health or a Council Bluffs doctor alike, as long as the provider accepts Medicare.

Douglas County had 46,026 Medicare Advantage members in June 2026, about 45% of its beneficiaries and more than twice Lancaster County's total (CMS). That still leaves roughly 56,000 Douglas County beneficiaries, and about 62% of Sarpy County's, on Original Medicare. Many of them add a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policy to cover what Medicare leaves behind. This page covers how those policies are priced and bought from an Omaha address. The statewide Medicare Supplement guide explains the plan letters and how Medigap works.

How are Medicare Supplement prices set for Omaha addresses?

Each company sets its own price, and the benefits are fixed by federal rules. A Plan G from one company pays exactly what a Plan G from another pays. So the only real comparison is premium today, how fast it rises, and how the company treats you.

What moves an Omaha quote:

FactorHow it works
AgeMost Nebraska policies are attained-age rated, so the premium rises as you age
Sex and tobacco useCompanies commonly price these separately
ZIP codeCompanies can rate by area, so use your own Omaha ZIP, not a friend's in Lincoln
Rating methodAttained-age, issue-age (priced on the age you buy) or community-rated (one price for everyone in an area)
DiscountsSome companies give household or payment discounts the online tools may not show
Rate historyTwo companies with the same starting price can raise rates very differently

Start with Medicare.gov's Medigap tool and your ZIP, whether that is 68114 near Methodist or 68154 out west. Treat the results as estimates. The state does not post its own rate comparison by company, so the federal tool is the closest thing to one. For a closer look at the most popular letter, see the Plan G guide.

Does it matter that some Medigap companies are based in Omaha?

It is a fine tiebreaker, not a reason to buy. Omaha is home base for several companies that sell Medicare Supplements in Nebraska:

  • Mutual of Omaha, whose Nebraska Medigap policies are issued by Omaha Supplemental Insurance Company. Mutual of Omaha reports an A+ rating from AM Best.
  • Physicians Mutual, founded in 1902, at 2600 Dodge Street. It reports an A+ (Superior) AM Best rating from October 2025.
  • Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska, at 1919 Aksarben Drive.

A local headquarters does not change the price, the benefits or your claims, which Medicare handles first. Financial strength and rate history matter more. The Medicare Supplement companies ranking compares companies on public data.

Who in Douglas and Sarpy counties gets a guaranteed issue right for 2027?

Mostly current Medica Medicare Advantage members. CMS plan data shows Medica leaving Douglas, Sarpy and six other eastern Nebraska counties for 2027. An Advantage plan pulling out of your county opens a federal guaranteed issue window: no health questions for Medigap Plans A, B, D and G, plus C and F for anyone eligible for Medicare before 2020.

Three conditions apply. The right only works if you go back to Original Medicare. The window opens 60 days before your Medica coverage ends and closes 63 days after it. And the insurer can ask for proof, so hang on to the Medica letter and the envelope it came in.

How does a Medigap policy work with Omaha's hospitals and the Iowa side of the metro?

There is no network to check, which is a big reason people choose a supplement. It pays its share wherever Original Medicare pays. Nebraska Medicine, including the Fred and Pamela Buffett Cancer Center, Methodist, CHI Health and any specialty hospital work the same way, provided the provider accepts Medicare.

That also covers the metro's Iowa side. If your doctor practices in Council Bluffs, a state line makes no difference to a Medigap policy. It does not matter during the winter months in Arizona either.

When you call an office, ask whether it takes Medicare and whether it takes Medicare assignment. A doctor who does not take assignment can bill up to 15% over the Medicare-approved amount. Plan G pays those excess charges. Plan N does not.

Should Offutt and Union Pacific retirees buy a Medigap policy?

Check what you already have first. Medicare & You 2027 notes that TRICARE generally requires you to enroll in Part A and Part B as soon as you are first eligible. If you have TRICARE For Life, find out exactly what it pays after Medicare before you buy a supplement on top of it. The Medicare for veterans guide covers how they fit together.

Union Pacific retirees enroll through the Railroad Retirement Board, and their Part B claims go to Railroad Medicare. A Medigap policy works the same way with Railroad Medicare as with regular Medicare.

How do Omaha residents compare supplements with Bill or on their own?

Bill works with Omaha residents mostly by phone and video from his Lincoln office, about 65 minutes away on I-80, and you are welcome to sit down there whenever you are in Lincoln. He compares multiple companies for your ZIP code, and his help costs you nothing.

If you would rather get a neutral second opinion:

  • Volunteers Assisting Seniors (900 S 74th Plaza, Suite 403; 402-444-6617), which serves as Omaha's office for Nebraska SHIP, formerly SHIIP.
  • Nebraska SHIP's statewide line, 1-800-234-7119, which is where the Department of Insurance sends people who want a one-on-one Medigap comparison.
  • 1-800-MEDICARE at 1-800-633-4227, staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week (TTY 1-877-486-2048).

Remember that a supplement does not cover prescriptions. The Omaha Part D page covers drug plans for 2027. Once you have your ZIP and age handy, talk to Bill.

Frequently asked questions

It depends on the company, the plan letter and you. Insurers set Medigap prices using your age, sex, tobacco use and ZIP code, plus their rating method and any household discount. Enter your own Omaha ZIP and age in Medicare.gov's Medigap tool to see current estimates, then get exact quotes. Compare the same plan letter across companies, because Plan G pays the same benefits at every company.

CMS's 2027 plan data no longer lists Medica's Medicare Advantage plans in Douglas or Sarpy County, so your plan ends December 31, 2026. You can join another Medicare Advantage plan, or return to Original Medicare and buy Plan A, B, D or G with no medical questions under a guaranteed issue right. Apply no later than 63 days after your Medica coverage ends, and keep your notice letter.

Yes, as long as the doctor or hospital accepts Medicare. A standard Medigap policy has no network and no state line. It pays its share whenever Original Medicare pays, anywhere in the United States. Ask the office whether they accept Medicare assignment too, because if they do not, they can bill excess charges. Plan G covers those charges and Plan N does not.

Likely yes. The Nebraska Department of Insurance's 2026 fact sheet says people who qualify for Medicare because of a disability get the same six-month Medigap Open Enrollment when their Part B begins. Companies may not offer every plan letter to people under 65, and an older state guide said under-65 applicants could be refused, so confirm with each company or Nebraska SHIP before you count on it. Compare several companies, because plans and prices can differ.

Volunteers Assisting Seniors is the Nebraska SHIP and SMP office for Omaha, at 900 S 74th Plaza, Suite 403 (402-444-6617). Its counselors compare Medicare options at no cost and do not sell insurance. You can also call the statewide Nebraska SHIP line at 1-800-234-7119, or 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227), which is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
