In short

- Otoe County is 22.3% age 65 and older, up 14.6% since 2020 (Census, July 1, 2025).
- Original Medicare and Medigap work with doctors in Iowa or any other state who take Medicare. Medicare Advantage networks may not.
- There is no local SHIP office in Nebraska City. Call Nebraska SHIP at 1-800-234-7119 or Blue Rivers Area Agency on Aging in Beatrice.
Nebraska City is about 48 miles southeast of Bill Jurey's Lincoln office, roughly an hour on Highway 2. Bill can meet you by phone or video without anyone making that drive, or at the office at 285 S 68th St Place if you are headed to Lincoln anyway. His help costs nothing, because the carriers pay the agent.
The Otoe County seat had 7,512 residents on July 1, 2025, up from 7,220 in 2020 (Census Bureau). About 18.4% of city residents are 65 or older (American Community Survey, 2020 to 2024). The county runs older: 3,694 of its 16,531 residents, or 22.3%, were 65 or older in 2025, up 14.6% in five years.
How does Bill work with people in Nebraska City?
Phone and video carry most of it. Have your medication list, your doctors' names and any plan letters handy, and the review goes in the usual order: medications, doctors and hospitals, the cost of a bad year, and your budget. Bill shows you the options. You choose.
What should you check about CHI Health St. Mary's?
St. Mary's itself, by name, in every plan. CHI Health St. Mary's, at 1301 Grundman Blvd (402-873-3321), has served the area since 1927. It is a critical access hospital, the federal designation for small rural hospitals, with a Level IV trauma emergency room.
St. Mary's belongs to CHI Health, the same system as CHI Health St. Elizabeth in Lincoln and the CHI hospitals in Omaha. That connection is useful but not proof. A Medicare Advantage plan can include one CHI facility and not another, and your doctor's network status can differ from the hospital's. For 2027, check:
- CHI Health St. Mary's.
- Your Nebraska City doctor or clinic.
- Each Lincoln or Omaha specialist, and the hospital where they would treat you.
Keep in mind that plans, premiums, networks and benefits are specific to each county and change yearly.
What if some of your doctors are across the river in Iowa?
Then Original Medicare has an edge. Nebraska City sits on the Missouri River, and with Original Medicare you can see any doctor or hospital in the U.S. that takes Medicare, including in Iowa. A Medigap policy follows the same rule, so it pays its share wherever Medicare pays.
Medicare Advantage is different. Plans build networks around the counties they serve, and an HMO generally covers out-of-network care only for emergencies and urgent care away from home. A PPO may cover an Iowa doctor out of network, at a higher cost. If any of your care is in Iowa, check those providers before you enroll. The Medicare and travel guide covers care away from home in more depth.
Why do drug plan tiers matter so much?
Because the same medication can cost very different amounts from one plan to the next. Bill tells it this way: "If you go with carriers A and B, you're going to go maximum out of pocket on your prescription... But if you go with plan C, oh, wait a second. They tiered that medication different, and now it's a $40 copay per month instead of $200."
That was an example, not a current price. For 2027, run your own list through every plan, including your pharmacy. Standalone drug plans in Nebraska change for 2027 too: SilverScript Choice and HealthSpring Extra Rx are leaving the state, and the yearly out-of-pocket cap on covered drugs rises to $2,400. The Part D guide explains tiers and formularies.
Retiring with retiree health benefits?
Find out exactly how they work with Medicare before you sign up for anything else. Once you stop working, retiree coverage generally pays after Medicare, not before it. That is why many retiree plans expect you to have both Part A and Part B. Skip Part B and you could be left paying the share Medicare would have covered, and you could owe a late penalty when you sign up later. Retiree coverage also does not count as current job-based coverage, so it does not give you the special window to delay Part B.
Ask your former employer's benefits office three questions: does the plan require Part B, does it include drug coverage that counts as creditable for Part D, and can you get back in if you leave?
Where can Nebraska City residents get local help?
The help is real but spread out, since Nebraska City has no local SHIP office and no senior center in the state directory.
- Nebraska SHIP (formerly SHIIP), the state's unbiased counseling program: 1-800-234-7119.
- Blue Rivers Area Agency on Aging, Beatrice, which serves Otoe County: 402-223-1376 or 888-317-9417. See the Beatrice page for more on Blue Rivers.
- Otoe County Respite Program, 1005 First Corso (402-873-6407): respite and companion care for people 60 and older.
- Senior centers in Syracuse (303 Railroad Ave) and Douglas (200 Main St).
- 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227, TTY 1-877-486-2048): reachable 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Nebraska City is where J. Sterling Morton proposed Arbor Day in 1872, and Arbor Day Farm and Lied Lodge still draw visitors. It is also home to OPPD's Nebraska City Station, which has units dating to 1979 and 2009, so the area has its share of utility retirees. The Nebraska SHIP guide explains each office's role, and you can talk to Bill when you are ready to compare.
Frequently asked questions
You have to check plan by plan for 2027. St. Mary's at 1301 Grundman Blvd is part of CHI Health, but a plan can treat one CHI hospital differently from another. Search the plan's provider directory for CHI Health St. Mary's, confirm with the hospital, and check your own doctor separately. Then check any Lincoln or Omaha specialist you see.
With Original Medicare, yes: you can use any doctor or hospital in the U.S. that takes Medicare, and a Medigap policy follows the same rule. With Medicare Advantage it depends on the plan. Many plans build their networks around the counties they serve, so an Iowa doctor may be out of network. Look up each out-of-state provider by name before you enroll.
Nebraska City has no local SHIP office, so call the statewide Nebraska SHIP line at 1-800-234-7119. Otoe County is served by Blue Rivers Area Agency on Aging in Beatrice (402-223-1376 or 888-317-9417). You can also call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) any hour of any day. None of these sell plans.
The state's senior center directory does not list one in Nebraska City. The Otoe County centers it lists are in Syracuse (303 Railroad Ave, 402-269-2957) and Douglas (200 Main St, 402-799-2300). In Nebraska City, the Otoe County Respite Program at 1005 First Corso (402-873-6407) offers respite and companion care for people 60 and older.
Usually without anyone making the drive. Bill's Lincoln office is about 48 miles away, roughly an hour on Highway 2, so most Nebraska City reviews happen by phone or video, and you can stop in at 285 S 68th St Place on a day you are in Lincoln anyway. Medications come first, then doctors, hospital costs and budget. Insurers pay the agent, so you pay nothing for his time.
