Medicare Help in Hickman, NE

Hickman grew about 39% between 2020 and 2025 and skews young, so many Medicare questions here come from adult children helping a parent or from people new to town. Bill Jurey's Lincoln office is about 25 minutes north. He meets in person, by phone or by video, and family members are welcome at the table.

In short

  • Hickman's population rose from about 2,632 in 2020 to 3,663 in 2025, the fastest growth of any town on this list.
  • The city lists Cedar Plains Family Medicine in town. Hospital care is in Lincoln, at Bryan Health and CHI Health.
  • Moving to Hickman from another county or state usually opens a two-month window to change Medicare Advantage or Part D plans.
  • Medicare does not pay for assisted living rent or long-term custodial care, including at local assisted living.

Hickman is growing faster than any other town on this list. The Census Bureau puts it at 3,663 residents on July 1, 2025, up from about 2,632 in 2020. That is roughly 39% growth in five years. Only about 9.7% of residents are 65 or older (American Community Survey, 2020 to 2024, small sample), so Hickman is a young town.

That shapes the Medicare questions here. Many come from adult children helping a parent, from people who just moved in, or from people a few years from 65 planning ahead. Bill Jurey's office at 285 S 68th St Place in Lincoln is about 14 miles and 25 minutes north.

How does Bill work with Hickman families?

In whatever way fits your household. Some people drive up to the office, some meet by video from the kitchen table, and some start with a phone call. When a parent and an adult child come in together, plan on about an hour.

Bring the parent's medication list, every doctor's name and any letters from their current plan. If you will be the one calling Medicare later, ask 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227, open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week; TTY 1-877-486-2048) how your parent can give permission for you to speak for them. Bill's help costs your family nothing, because carriers pay the agent.

Where do Hickman residents get care, and what should you check?

The City of Hickman's medical page lists one clinic in town and sends residents to Lincoln for the rest:

WhereWhat it is
Cedar Plains Family Medicine, 1201 Park Drive, HickmanFamily medicine clinic
Bryan LifePointe Urgent Care, 7501 S 27th St, LincolnUrgent care
Bryan Medical Center East and West, LincolnHospitals (Bryan Health)
CHI Health St. Elizabeth, 555 S 70th St, LincolnHospital (CHI Health)

In a Medicare Advantage plan, check your Hickman doctor and the Lincoln hospital that doctor uses, by name, for 2027. Check the urgent care too. HMOs generally cover urgent care out of network only when you are away from home, so the urgent care you use in Lincoln needs to be in network. Plans, premiums, networks and benefits vary by county and are reset every year.

Hickman shares Lancaster County's plan list with Lincoln, which means Medica's Medicare Advantage plans are gone for 2027 and Devoted Health is new. The Lincoln location page covers the county's hospitals and plan changes in more detail.

Just moved to Hickman? Here is what it means for Medicare

A move usually lets you change plans outside the fall enrollment season. Moving out of your plan's service area, or into an area with new options, opens a Special Enrollment Period. It begins the month you move and lasts two full months after. If you tell your plan before you move, it can start the month before.

  • Coming from another county or state with Medicare Advantage? Your old plan may not serve Lancaster County at all. Pick a new one within the window.
  • Have a Medigap policy? It generally stays with you anywhere in the U.S., though your premium may change at your new address.
  • Have a standalone Part D plan? Check that it is offered here and that your pharmacy is in its network.

The Special Enrollment Periods guide lists the other common situations.

Does Medicare pay for assisted living or a nursing home?

Not for long-term care. Hickman has assisted living (the city lists Haven Manor at 730 Larkspur), and families often assume Medicare will cover a parent's stay. It will not pay assisted living rent or custodial care like help with bathing, dressing and meals.

What Medicare will pay for is a short stretch in a skilled nursing facility. After at least three days in a row as a hospital inpatient, Part A can cover up to 100 days per benefit period for daily skilled care or therapy. Read Medicare and long-term care before a hospital discharge, not after.

Where can Hickman residents get local Medicare help?

Hickman is one of three rural Lancaster County towns with an Aging Partners senior center, along with Bennet and Firth. The Hickman Senior Center at 115 Locust Street, in the Hickman Community Center, is open Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. per the state directory. Aging Partners runs it, with activities like a walking group, foot clinics and BINGO.

For Medicare counseling, call Aging Partners at 402-441-7070. Those counselors are trained and certified through Nebraska SHIP, and people 60 and older pay nothing for the help. Nebraska SHIP (formerly SHIIP) also takes calls statewide at 1-800-234-7119. The Nebraska SHIP guide explains what each office does.

Turning 65 soon in Hickman?

Mark the calendar three months before the month you turn 65. That is when your seven-month Initial Enrollment Period opens, and signing up then means Medicare starts on the first day of your birthday month. A separate six-month Medigap window opens with your first month of Part B at 65 or older, and Nebraska has no birthday rule that reopens it later.

If you are still on a job-based plan, the rules depend on your employer's size. Turning 65 in Lincoln applies to Hickman too, since both are in Lancaster County. When you have questions, talk to Bill.
