In short
- BD's Columbus plant has about 2,100 employees, and 164 of them have worked there 25 years or more (2024).
- Still on a BD or NPPD health plan at 65? When your employer has 20 or more workers, that plan usually pays before Medicare, and Part B can often wait.
- Columbus Community Hospital is community-owned and not part of a big system. Check it by name in any plan.
- Platte County's Nebraska SHIP office is Northeast Nebraska Area Agency on Aging in Norfolk (402-370-3454).
Columbus is about 79 miles northwest of Bill Jurey's office in Lincoln, roughly 1 hour 40 minutes by car. At that distance, a phone or video call is the practical way to meet, and the office at 285 S 68th St Place is open if a Lincoln trip is already on your calendar. You won't pay him anything; the carriers do.
The Platte County seat had 25,248 residents on July 1, 2025, up from 24,040 in 2020 (Census Bureau). About 17.7% of city residents are 65 or older (American Community Survey, 2020 to 2024). Across Platte County, the 65-plus population reached 7,030 in 2025, or 19.7% of residents, after growing 16.0% in five years.
How does Bill work with people in Columbus?
Over the phone or on video, with your medications, doctors' names and any employer benefits paperwork close by. The review goes medications first, then doctors and hospitals, then what a hospital stay would cost, then your budget.
For many Columbus households the conversation starts a step earlier, with work. People who spend 25 or 30 years at one employer often have coverage choices tied to that job, and the order you make them in matters. Bill frames it as more than a Medicare signup: "Retirement's not just signing up for Medicare and hoping your money lasts." The retirement puzzle post explains how he thinks about the pieces.
Working past 65 at BD, NPPD or another big employer?
You may be able to wait on Part B, but check the rules first. Columbus has two large, long-tenured employers. BD's Columbus plant opened in 1949 and has about 2,100 employees, 164 of whom had worked there 25 years or more as of 2024. NPPD, the Nebraska Public Power District, is headquartered at 1414 15th St with 383 staff.
Here is how Medicare treats job-based coverage after 65:
| Your situation | Who pays first | Part B timing |
|---|---|---|
| Working, employer has 20 or more employees | Group plan | You can usually delay Part B without a penalty |
| Working, employer has fewer than 20 employees | Medicare | Sign up for Part B on time |
| Retired, with COBRA or retiree coverage | Medicare | Sign up for Part B on time; these do not count as current work coverage |
When your job or coverage ends, you get an 8-month window to sign up for Part B, whether or not you take COBRA. If you have a health savings account, stop contributions six months before you apply for Medicare, because Part A can start up to six months back. The working past 65 guide and employer coverage vs Medicare walk through the details.
Drug coverage needs its own check. If your job-based plan includes prescriptions, your employer should send a yearly notice saying whether that coverage is "creditable," meaning at least as good as standard Part D. Keep those notices. They prove you had creditable coverage if you join a Part D plan after 65, which protects you from the Part D late penalty.
Which hospital should Columbus residents check in a plan network?
Columbus Community Hospital, at 4600 38th St. It is community-owned and not-for-profit, with 47 acute care beds, so its network status cannot be read off a Bryan Health or CHI Health listing. Columbus is not on the state's critical access hospital map.
For each Medicare Advantage plan you consider for 2027, look up Columbus Community Hospital by name, then your Columbus doctor, then any specialist you see in Omaha, Lincoln or Norfolk. With an HMO, you generally need to stay in network unless it is an emergency. A Medigap policy alongside Original Medicare goes wherever Medicare is accepted.
Your plan list depends on your county of residence, not your mailing town. If you live outside Columbus in a neighboring county, your 2027 options can differ. CMS data shows Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska leaving Boone and Butler counties for 2027, and Aetna leaving Colfax County. Plan availability, premiums, networks and benefits are county-specific and change every year.
What about the rest of the retirement picture?
Once health coverage is settled, the next question is usually money. Bill hears one worry more than any other, and he tries to turn it around: "The number one concern is, am I going to run out of money before I die? And my goal is to switch that from 'am I going to run out of money before I die' to 'how much legacy am I going to leave for my family?' And that's an entirely different conversation." If that conversation is next for you, life insurance for retirees is a starting point.
Where can Columbus residents get local Medicare help?
For Platte County, the Area Agency on Aging and the nearest SHIP counseling office are the same Norfolk agency. Nebraska SHIP, formerly SHIIP, is the state program that gives Medicare advice without selling anything.

Frequently asked questions
Not necessarily. If you have health coverage from current work at an employer with 20 or more employees, the group plan generally pays first, and you can usually delay Part B without a penalty. When the job or coverage ends, you get an 8-month window to sign up. COBRA and retiree coverage do not count as current work coverage, so do not wait on them.
Some plans include it and some may not, and that can change each year. Columbus Community Hospital at 4600 38th St is community-owned and not-for-profit, so you cannot judge its network status from a Bryan Health or CHI Health listing. Look it up by name in each plan's 2027 directory, call to confirm, and check your own doctor and any Omaha or Lincoln specialist separately.
Northeast Nebraska Area Agency on Aging in Norfolk is the local Nebraska SHIP office for Platte County. Its SHIP office is at 110 N 37th Street, Unit 101, and the phone numbers are 402-370-3454 and 800-672-8368. The statewide SHIP line is 1-800-234-7119. In Columbus, the Columbus Senior Center at 3111 19th St (402-563-4444) is open weekdays.
Columbus has no VA clinic. The closest VA clinic is in Norfolk. The VA and Medicare are two separate benefits, and you can have both. The VA encourages veterans to sign up for Part B when first eligible to avoid a growing late penalty, and VA drug coverage counts as creditable for Part D.
Mostly on the phone or a video call, since his Lincoln office is about 79 miles away. If a trip to Lincoln is already on your calendar, you can sit down with him at 285 S 68th St Place. He prices the Platte County plan list, not Lincoln's, beginning with your prescriptions and then your doctors, likely hospital costs and budget. There is no charge to you.
