In short
- Ashland has no hospital. The nearest is Saunders Medical Center in Wahoo, and Lincoln and Omaha hospitals are each about 30 to 40 minutes away.
- If your doctors are split between Lincoln and Omaha, check every one of them by name in a plan's 2027 network.
- Medica's Medicare Advantage plans are missing from Saunders County in the 2027 CMS plan data, so its members need to choose again.
- Saunders County is served by Lincoln's Aging Partners (402-441-7070), not the Omaha agency.
Ashland is about 23 miles and 35 minutes northeast of Bill Jurey's office in Lincoln, by US-6 or I-80. It sits roughly halfway between Lincoln and Omaha, and that location shapes almost every Medicare question here. Bill meets Ashland residents at the office, by phone or by video. You pay nothing for his help; the insurance companies pay him.
Ashland had 3,483 residents on July 1, 2025, up about 13% from 3,083 in 2020 (Census Bureau). About 13.2% of residents are 65 or older (American Community Survey, 2020 to 2024, small sample). Saunders County is older: 4,918 of its 23,702 residents, or 20.7%, were 65 or older in 2025, up 17.8% since 2020.
How does Bill work with people in Ashland?
At about 35 minutes, the office is an easy drive from Ashland, and phone or video works just as well if you would rather stay put. Either way, the review starts with your medications, then your doctors, then what a hospital stay would cost you, then your budget.
When doctors are split between two cities, the math matters more than usual. Bill's line for it: "Let's do the math. I'm a math guy."
Where do Ashland residents get hospital care?
Not in Ashland. The town has no hospital. The nearest is Saunders Medical Center, a critical access hospital in Wahoo. Lincoln and Omaha hospitals are each about 30 to 40 minutes away. The City of Ashland's organization list includes the Ashland Community Medical Clinic Foundation (402-944-3383); ask which providers practice there and check them by name.
That leaves Ashland residents with a real choice of systems:
| Direction | Main hospital systems |
|---|---|
| Lincoln, to the southwest | Bryan Health, CHI Health |
| Omaha, to the northeast | CHI Health, Methodist, Nebraska Medicine |
| Wahoo, to the northwest | Saunders Medical Center |
The Lincoln and Omaha location pages list the hospitals in each city.
What if your doctors are in both Lincoln and Omaha?
Then the network decides more than the premium does. A Medicare Advantage plan sold in Saunders County can have a strong network in one metro and a thin one in the other. Before you enroll in any 2027 plan:
- List every doctor you see and the hospital each one uses.
- Look each one up by name in the plan's 2027 directory.
- Call the offices that matter most and ask whether they will take that plan next year.
HMOs generally cover only in-network care outside of emergencies and urgent care away from home. PPOs let you see out-of-network doctors, usually for more. With Original Medicare and a Medigap policy, you can use any U.S. doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare. The HMO vs PPO guide covers the details.
A worksheet for two-city patients
Before a review, fill in a simple table like this one. It turns a vague worry into a yes or no for each plan.
| Doctor or hospital | City | Hospital they use | In this plan's 2027 network? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Family doctor | |||
| Specialist (heart, eye, joint, other) | |||
| Hospital for planned surgery | |||
| Pharmacy |
Bring the filled-in table to your review, along with your medication list. If one plan checks every box and another misses your specialist, the premium difference between them usually stops mattering.
What changes for Saunders County plans in 2027?
Medica is leaving. Its Medicare Advantage plans do not appear for Saunders County in the 2027 CMS plan data, part of a pullback from eight eastern Nebraska counties. Check the notice Medica sent and your Annual Notice of Change, since a company letter is the final word on your own plan. Members should line up new coverage so nothing lapses on January 1, 2027. The exit also opens a guaranteed issue window: for a limited time, you can buy certain Medigap policies with no health questions.
Plan availability, premiums, networks and benefits change every year and differ by county, even between neighbors. Compare during Annual Enrollment, October 15 to December 7, 2026.
Standalone Part D drug plans work differently. They are sold by region, not county, so Ashland sees the same drug plans as the rest of Nebraska. For 2027 the standard Part D deductible rises to $700, up from $615 in 2026, and the yearly out-of-pocket cap on covered drugs rises to $2,400. Check your own drugs and pharmacy, because each plan sets its own drug list and copays.
Where can Ashland residents get local Medicare help?
From Lincoln's Aging Partners. Even though Ashland sits between the two metros, Saunders County is served by Aging Partners rather than the Omaha-based agency. Counselors there hold Nebraska SHIP certification and help anyone 60 or older at no charge: 402-441-7070.
- Ashland Senior Center, at Golden Apartments: 402-944-7332.
- Nebraska SHIP (formerly SHIIP), which answers from anywhere in Nebraska: 1-800-234-7119.
- 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227, TTY 1-877-486-2048): staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Ashland is also home to Camp Ashland, a Nebraska National Guard training site in use for more than 100 years and rebuilt for $62.3 million after the 2019 flood. If you retired from the military and use TRICARE, read Medicare for veterans before you make any Medicare change. If you want someone to double-check your list, talk to Bill.
Frequently asked questions
No. The closest hospital is Saunders Medical Center, a critical access hospital in Wahoo. Lincoln's hospitals, run mainly by Bryan Health and CHI Health, and Omaha's, run by CHI Health, Methodist and Nebraska Medicine, are each about 30 to 40 minutes away. Before choosing a Medicare Advantage plan, decide which of those you would actually use and check them by name.
Sometimes, but never assume it. A plan's network can be strong in one city and thin in the other. Look up each doctor and hospital by name in the plan's 2027 directory, and call the offices to confirm. A PPO lets you see out-of-network providers at a higher cost. Original Medicare plus Medigap has no network at all: any provider in the country that takes Medicare will do.
Yes, for its Medicare Advantage plans. Saunders is one of eight eastern Nebraska counties where Medica has no plans in the 2027 CMS data, and the letter Medica mailed you should confirm it. Pick a replacement between October 15 and December 7, 2026. A plan leaving your area also lets you buy certain Medigap policies with no health questions, as long as you apply inside the federal deadlines.
Saunders County is one of the eight counties served by Aging Partners in Lincoln, so call 402-441-7070. Its benefits counselors, who are SHIP-certified, work with people 60 and older. You can also reach Nebraska SHIP statewide at 1-800-234-7119. The Ashland Senior Center, at Golden Apartments, can be reached at 402-944-7332.
If you qualify for TRICARE For Life, you must have Medicare Part A and Part B to keep it. Medicare pays first for Medicare-covered care, and TRICARE For Life generally pays after Medicare. You can get care at military hospitals and clinics only when space is available. Rules for Guard and Reserve retirees depend on your retirement status, so confirm your eligibility with TRICARE.
