Can I Have Medicare Advantage and a Medicare Supplement at the Same Time?

No, you can't use them together to cover your care. A Medicare Supplement, also called Medigap, works with Original Medicare. It doesn't pay Medicare Advantage deductibles, copays, or other out-of-pocket costs. These are different coverage choices, not plans you stack on top of each other.

What does each option work with?

There's a lot of confusion about how it's handled. The word “supplement” can sound like something you could add to any Medicare plan. But it has a specific job.

Original Medicare with a Supplement: Original Medicare includes Part A, hospital insurance, and Part B, medical insurance. A Supplement helps pay certain costs left over after Original Medicare pays, depending on the policy.

Medicare Advantage: This is another way to receive your Part A and Part B benefits, through a private insurance plan. You follow that plan's coverage rules and cost-sharing requirements. A Supplement won't cover those costs for you.

How do I decide which coverage fits?

Start with your health care and budget, rather than a friend's recommendation, a TV commercial, or the premium alone. A plan that fits someone else may not fit you.

Before choosing, check:

  • Your doctors and hospitals: How would you access them under each option? Are there network or referral rules?
  • Your prescriptions: How would your medications be covered, and what would you pay? Medigap doesn't include prescription drug coverage. Many Medicare Advantage plans do.
  • Your total costs: Compare monthly premiums with deductibles, copays, and other costs when you actually need care.

What if I already have one and want to switch?

Check the timing and eligibility rules before canceling anything. Leaving Medicare Advantage and buying a Supplement are separate steps. Being able to leave one plan doesn't automatically mean you can buy any Supplement you want.

Depending on your circumstances, a Supplement insurer may ask health questions and could deny an application. Enrollment periods and protections matter, so confirm what applies to you and when new coverage would start.
